Loss stings. Not the end of the world though.

Learn from it, get better and play with a chip on your shoulder. Reality is the parity across football is changing the game. That was a good FSU team and not the 2-10 team form last year. Guss bus was rolling.

Bama seemed to be off all day - lack of intensity, maybe a little bit of underestimate of the opponent. Doak with fans screaming for 60 mins is a tough place to play. Coaches need to improve weekly just as the team does. Womack may not be the guy. CKD is here for at least a few years - even with 4 loss seasons, so hopefully he figures it out sooner than later.

A few key plays that change the game and the outcome could be different but yeah didn't go Bama's way today.

Roll Tide Roll!

Every loss this guy has achieved have been the worst losses in decades. It’s frankly impressive.
In 2022 Arizona St. had two conference wins. One was against DeBoer's 11-2 Washington team. It's not something we'd ever expect under Saban but it's not as surprising coming from DeBoer.

But who do you replace DeBoer with? I mean realistically who is available? I think this is the CFB gods leveling the playing field after Saban retired. Look at Nebraska they went on a run but haven't won a natty since the late 90's.
I think you do need to have realistic expectations. This isn't Saban vs. DeBoer, this is DeBoer vs.other options.

Personally I'm looking at three things this season, to kind of keep perspective on how things could have been:

How Dabo does.
He was an unpopular but somewhat more realistic option. Who has a better season is a relatively fair measure of the situation.

How Sayin does.
At this point I've seen two versions of the same basic account, that Deboer did something to make Sayin feel like he wasn't a priority. If he has a great season while Alabama struggles at the position it will likely bring these rumors back and beg the question of how much DeBoer did to keep him around. That might not be fair, but certainly creates a what if scenario of how things could have gone if someone else had been in his shoes.

How Justice Haynes does.
I felt like he was under-utilized at Alabama, and DeBoer's offense in general under-utilizes their running backs. If he excels at Michigan it demonstrates the wasted opportunity. He's playing a weak team today but currently has 2 TDs and is averaging 9.6 yards per carry.

That doesn't specifically cover alternatives, which range from Lanning to Kiffin, but I am going to keep an eye on how some others are doing and evaluate DeBoer accordingly.

I get the angst… I really do. However, how do put a solid game plan together when you have absolutely no idea where an opponent’s strengths or weaknesses are going to be? Not only did you have new players, but you have brand new coordinators too. You may have film on each player and each coach’s system… but you have NO idea how guys will fit in those schemes. The only thing you can hope to do is adjust during the game… but it becomes harder to do that when your best DL and best RB is on the bench.

The days of it being “what it used to be” at UA and anywhere else is over. It’s not just us - check out other teams like Texas today. The adjustment in the future will be that marque matchups in the first game will be history. I guarantee you we play FSU a better game in week 1 or 2… instead of today.

It was a perfect storm in a lot of ways. And the QB-Gus relationship didn't get any hype preseason like the OU one...since Castellanos played for Gus before going to BC. He wasn't learning Gus's system from scratch like some guys would be.

From an Alabama perspective, though, what was different or "better" when compared to our performance in the OU game from last year (other than we actually scored TDs this time)?

Have to have more then 3 down linemen or people will keep running at will against us. Especially the qb. They are in 2 tightend set and we have 3 guys with hand down. 7 versus 3 or even with backers your still out man. Womack refuses to get out of the 3-3-5. It's not a good scheme to stop run if rb blocks and qb runs you got 8 guys blocking and we have 5dbs covering 2 wide receivers.

If Womack doesn't get out of base to stop run everybody will run for 250 yards.

The entire 2023 season I honestly thought Washington was a bad team. I watched them play every game and they were frequently losing to unranked teams including Arizona until the final minutes. They frequently looked just bad, then Penix would pull some stunt. I was seriously surprised they beat Texas and played for the NC without embarrassing themselves.

I thought maybe my assessment was wrong, but I’m starting the worry that I was actually right.

I’ll tell you what.

I’ve been pretty vocal about not wanting Dabo and I still don’t like him.

But I’d take him over this.

Not easy to admit.

Amen to that. We supposedly have one of the most talented rosters in CFB. Top 5 in recruiting.
It aint NIL why we are struggling.

Key word… “supposedly”. You’re expecting us to not lose a beat in our running defense when we lose our All-American candidate there. As I mentioned before, how would YOU have game planned for this game given the number of new FSU coaches and players? The best you can hope for is to adjust after the game starts… and we did better after halftime because of that reason. We were on the verge of possibly tying the game if our DL doesn’t make a bond-headed move to drop a wrestling elbow on the downed FSU QB.

We have one assistant in the box (Grubb). That’s completely asinine. Grubb is overrated. Ty Simpson has ZERO touch on the ball. We get overwhelmed on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Can’t tackle at all and are very soft. Yeah, we can’t make a change at head coach. 😂😂😂😂😂

I scanned the 6 pages of posts but didn't read them all. Saw lots of new members and posters. Trolls? IDK because I skipped their posts.

Here are my thoughts. Take them for what they are worth ... not a lot. ;)

I thought Simpson played pretty well for his first start in a hostile environment. I expect to see improvement in his play and leadership as the season progresses. He needs to have a come to Jesus meeting with his OL before he gets injured.

We need to find a way to get the ball to Williams. I hope he's not seriously injured. OTOH, he dropped several balls he should've caught. Maybe he needs to spend less time listening to the praise and focus on being the difference maker he can be.

The defense looked confused and hesitant all day. Translation: Our DC got outcoached by Gus today. I really hate that but it is what it is. Lots of room for improvement there.

Right now I think we're an 8-4 team. That won't get us to the playoffs and the heat will be on CKD, as it should be. But we are not without talent. There is plenty of room for improvement on both sides of the ball. If we have good coaches, that will happen. Only time will tell.

Finally, I think FSU is a pretty good team. Their QB is a perfect fit for Gus's offense so they will win a lot of games this year. They may win the ACC and make the playoffs. If that happens, the loss today won't look as bad as it does today.

The 3-3-5 drives me nuts

Justice Haynes was underutilized in Saban’s system. So that’s something not to watch

I’m tired boss

between NIL and the portal, I’m losing interest. This was a poor effort all round. Not sure where we go from here, but they managed to tank the resale value of the games I wasn’t attending and now I’m wondering if I should just sell them all.

Time will obviously tell, but I think FSU will prove to be a much better team than OU of last year. Also, another similarity is that we had an injury to a key run stopper in both games. Depth… it can’t be emphasized enough.

DeBoer is not the guy. This will now have to play out over the next few years due to his contract. It’s going to be painful.

Due to points well articulated by crimsonaudio, it’s going to be really difficult to hang in there. I did it during the DuBose - Shula era. I’m older now. Not sure I have the patience for it again, especially in this paradigm, where the players are basically mercenaries.

The NFL is superior in every way now.
