Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. LSU...

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Our defense did play great but LSU’s offense has been terrible all season. I do think the defense is playing better and made plays to win the game two weeks in a row. On offense, I think we have to accept who we are. We’re like a basketball team that lives and dies by the 3. We’re going to win or lose based off the game Ty and the receivers have. Ty needs to settle down a bit and control his emotions. I think we’ve got an uphill battle but this team can absolutely win a title.

Unless and until the OL improves, the Oklahoma and Auburn games could be toss ups at best. If we get by those two games, I am not confident in our chances against either Texas A&M, Georgia, or Ole Miss in the SEC Championship game.
We’ve got to find a rhythm again on offense. Running up the middle on first down for no gain isn’t doing it. I think we need to better utilize quick throws for easier completions that would take some pressure off of Ty and the offensive line. Our playmakers are at receiver not running back. Quickly get the ball in their hands in space and let them work. I’m not saying totally abandon the run, but we’ve basically got to open up the running game by first throwing.

I’m frankly surprised we’ve gotten as far as we have with the OL play thus far. I don’t know how much of it is offensive philosophy, coaching, talent ( or lack thereof) , or a combo of some or all three. It’s hard to imagine getting through OU, barn, SECCG ( hopefully), CFP without at least something approaching a respectable running game.

I know the lack of a running game absolutely plays a part but is it also possible the Heisman/#1 Pick talk is getting in Ty’s head a bit? He’s been pressing ever since he became the center of that talk. It reminds me a bit like Milroe last year when he wasn’t the same after the UGA game. I’m not blaming Ty either cause it’s natural for young players to get caught up in their hype but someone needs to get him to calm down a bit. Thankfully he’s still playing good enough to win us games, that drive at the end of the half was magic.

Look I am not excusing any of our flaws but this year has been 2010 levels of crap in terms of our opposition getting time off to prepare for us. Bama play four ranked teams in a row then has to play at South Carolina/
LSU gets a bye.
Oklahoma gets a bye.
Auburn gets a bye and then plays Mercer before play bama.
Even the college football nerds on twitter are calling it out now.

and we keep winning

I love that we won, but I will not rewatch the game. I think our defense has glimpses of being special. Some of the strips/punch outs are things of beauty and you can see how much they work that drill on a daily basis. As for the offense, I just hope we are saving plays for the future.

The Oklahoma D Line is legit.

Bama’s D may be improving bit by bit, but the O is regressing. The further the season goes on, the more tape opposing coordinators have on Bama.

Oklahoma has seen all it needs to see and has the horses to let the D-line pressure the QB and contain the non-existent run game. They will throw 7 into mid-level coverage and deal with the one out of 10 deep balls that Ty throws accurately.

Ty’s strength has not been the deep ball. We need to run the type of routes that dink and dunk our way down the field that can frustrate any good defense. The route tree just isn’t doing that

I have not read the thread yet, but just want to say I am grateful for the win. It was ugly on offense. Defense was great for the most part. If we don't get the offense rolling/playcalling better... I am not sure we can beat OU or Auburn. Would hate to have 3 losses again and not make the playoffs. I think Ty is putting too much pressure on himself, but I understand it because we don't have a run game. If we had a run game, we would definitely be in the national championship game.

A running game is crucial because it allows you to control the tempo of the game, shorten the number of possessions of your opponent, rest your defense and, at times, utterly demoralized your opponent.

We don’t need to run for 200 yards a game. A consistent 125-150 would be nice. There is no reason we should need to rely on the short passing game in 3rd and two yards or less unless we face a stacked box.

The truest measure is being able to “run the ball when the other guy knows you’re going to”. At some point you just have to line up and whip the other guy. We haven’t shown the ability to do that. And we won’t get very far assuming we get to the CFP with a running game rank in the 120’s in rushing offense.

Just thinking back at LSU vs Alabama, this one is similar to many of the other games even with CNS's great NC teams. We all recall McCarron to Yeldon! From my perspective the LSU D was tremendously talented with a cornerback rated at the top in the country. It appeared to me that they had more athletes than the Bama offense could handle effectively.

It is a great lesson in preparing for Oklahoma!

The constant OL pressure is getting to Ty psychologically. There has been an effort by the coaches to run more even if unproductive to give him a break. Also, he has tried to take deeper shots down the field to get off the field with points.

Its not working. The OL is underperforming big time. Defenses are setting up in more man coverage and bringing 6-7 every play filling every gap. Its even stifling our screen game. Our OL can get no forward momentum on runs.

Im afraid are capabilities are now known, and we can't counteract. And the coaches are finding out just how necessary a running game is navigating and SEC schedule as opposed to a West Coast schedule.

We are reaching our plateau of what we can achieve this year I'm afraid.

Full disclosure: I didn’t watch the game. I followed on the radio with Chris Stewart and Tyler Watts. And yes I’m concerned as many are with the regression we are experiencing offensively.

But I know that I’m often a “prisoner of the moment”. And I get caught up in the “comparison” of our performance versus opponents against what another team did. The “TAMU destroyed them two weeks ago in Baton Rouge” comparison.

I think this team was a different team than we saw two weeks ago due to one thing- Addition by subtraction with Kelly be fired. By all accounts Wilson has the respect of the players on that team. Brian Kelly certainly didn’t . I think instead of coming apart, they came together and played better, at least defensively, than they have all year. At least that is my hope.

LSU wasn’t picked by many across college football to be a national title contender because they lacked talent. They probably have has much talent as anyone in the conference. They just never came together under a narcissist like Kelly.
