Went to the game. Great atmosphere, crowd was into the game. Here are some random observations after rewatching the game this morning:
LB play was atrocious. Too often they played flat footed. Lawson probably had the worst game of his life, and Malachi Moore wasn't far behind. At times the DL was getting penetration, but they often got out of their rushing lanes, allowing the SC QB to scramble. A lot of this is coaching, and all available evidence suggests that Wommack just isn't the guy.
Offense had an off game, but it wasn't that bad, once you accept that SC has two legitimate NFL-caliber edge rushers, and that we were making a concerted effort to have longer drives. You'd think that our army of analysts would have noted how good that one edge rusher is and that we would have done more scheming to neutralize him. Maybe we did and Booker and Pritchett just had off games. Still need to work the RBs into the game. OC is still learning how to play call. Bernard is almost as dangerous as Williams, and the TEs are becoming more of a weapon.
Milroe can be counted on for a couple of brain farts a game, but several of his mistakes were simply unacceptable at this point in his career. Before the endzone INT, we shifted our alignment and had some motion. The defense did not move an inch in response to either--so they were likely just selling out on a Milroe run. The OC and/or Milroe didn't adjust, and Milroe ran into the teeth of the defense. The subsequent INT wasn't so much a bad throw as an excellent defensive play.
For the most part, the officials were letting everyone play; that said, there were two pretty clear targeting calls that weren't even looked at--you'd think that the replay booth would at least take a second look. That's troubling on multiple levels.
Saban was all about a business-like approach; at times it kept us from getting up for a big game and we had issues. DeBoer wants a more emotional approach; while it can result in things like the first quarter against Georgia, it also make the team prone to losing confidence; which is the major problem with our defensive front 7.
The outlook isn't particularly good for the rest of the season; that said, it's becoming clear that except for Texas, everyone has some notable weaknesses.
