Last night was one of those games that are so fleeting that reminded me of why I got into college football in the first place. The crimson and orange pageantry, the Third Saturday in October, the game meaning almost certain elimination from the playoff for the loser, and one of those rare BDS moments where Brown's TD lit up the night and the stadium.
I think the seats at BDS are too far away from the field (on the sides) to "really" create a packed-in, intimidating environment, and it takes a superstar moment to REALLY get a verbal crowd reaction that comes through the television. The pregame at both 2010 Auburn and 2012 aTm (sadly, both losses). Rocky Block 2009. Jonathan Allen's fumble recovery NOT in 2016 against aTm where for the only time in my life I thought the stadium was going to collapse inward.
And Brown's pick six to close out the first half. Everything about that play was a microcosm of those moments we cherish, remember, and love. From snagging the ball ("hey, they're not gonna score") to the race up the field ("but we might..") to the broken tackle ("okay....now!") to crossing the goal line and the eruption of the crowd, it was perfect.
As I noted last night, even Sean McDonough's call was perfect, and I'm not a huge fan of the guy. No bald-headed guy who looks like a hotel valet takes over baseball for Jack Buck (fired because he was old) unless, oh yes, his Daddy is also famous. NOT a big fan of the guy though I don't hate him, either.
But his call there was perfect, spot-on, and made the play made-for-TV even more.
If it happens this year for us, that play and that call will be one of those that stands forever in "oh yes, I remember what I was doing and that call, etc."
