Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

It would be unconstitutional for a state school to have a religious affiliation...

I should have known that. (Senior moment)
I don't know why I thought they had an affiliation with the Catholic Church... My bad.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

The fact that Penn State and Ohio State are in the same division is funny... I guess the division should be changed to "The Don't Report Division."

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

Time will tell what really occurred. However, I think its quite sad that his career will end like this.

Quite frankly, most people couldn't give a flying flip about how "sad" it will be to see Paterno's career ending right now.

And the silence in regard to McQueary still being employed is sickening as well. We're talking about someone who was witness to a sexual assault and didn't do anything to stop it.

I go to school with a Penn State fan. She has a facebook status that reads "It breaks my heart to see such an amazing coach leave Penn State!" I'm tempted to comment, but I'm going to refrain from getting into a useless argument.

Man....so hard on Joe Pa.....I can understand if he had knowledge and did nothing (my understanding is he did notified the chain of command) ........but in my life time, he has been a great Legend with unquestionable morals, similiar to our own Paul Bryant.....let the facts completely come out before making a rash judgment on him! Judge not lest be judged!!! Anywho, my opinion! RTR

College football coaches should not be criticized. They are $5 mill per year gods who do no wrong. Only the players fail to execute the perfect game plan. Surely the all time wins leader did nothing wrong.

He let a man with repeated and numerous allegations of sexual abuse against minors around his program as if nothing was wrong. Sandusky was in the football complex as late as last week. He had the power on that campus to cut this off immediately, and he decided to try and sweep it under the rug.

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

This is so ugly on so many levels. My heart breaks for the children and their families. I am furious at those that knew and did nothing to intervene. I am saddened to see a revered legend actually have such bad judgement. I am saddened even more to see the game of college football have to endure yet another scandal. And my deepest sympathies go out to the Penn State nation, who in spite of their efforts to demonstrate the highest levels of class throughout the years, have to endure this embarassment and humiliation.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

Hate it for Joe.

Like Watergate... The cover-up's worse than the crime as far as taking you down...
Jo P, The AD, and the President of the University should be relieved of their duties ASAP.
It's a travesty to allow Jo Pa to finish the football season and retire.
If you don't agree, Imagine that it's your child, or a friends child that was sexually assaulted.
(This is where the feelings of outrage should come front and center...)

Jo Pa should not be afforded the opportunity to ride off into the sunset after a long and successful career.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

If Penn State thinks it's bad now, they are in for a rude, rude awakening.

I was in grad school at Penn State in the early 90s. It was generally expected that Sandusky would succeed Paterno at some point; he retired when it “became obvious” that it wasn’t going to happen.

Hard not to conclude that Sandusky’s extracurriculars were behind that decision, making PSU even more complicit in all subsequent molestation.

He's admitted he was told about this and all he did was what he was legally required to do.

Defend him if you wish, but it appears he simply had you fooled with his 'morality'.

Anyone who wouldn't follow this to it's conclusion is a dirtbag, JoPa included.

yep, its beginning to look like Joe Pa's skill was in skillfully crafting an upstanding aw shucks image instead of living it

Re: Penn State Coach Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season

I just don't understand JoePa's reasoning behind his decision not to actually do anything. And I will never understand it either.

im guessing a combination of CYA an a monstrous ego. there are a lot of "upstanding" people in positions of power who's caring of others is very limited and shallow.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

If you are someone defending Joe Paterno, then you should go read the indictment filed. It is publicly available. There is NO defense. The GA that witnessed the abuse should have beaten the crap out of Sandusky, called the police and then talked to the "chain of command" at Penn State.

The number of victims will continue to rise. There is no penalty severe enough for a predator like Sandusky. The Penn State athletic department and administration (including Joe Pa) enabled this tragedy. They knew children were being abused and DID NOTHING.

Yeah, and when you look closer at the generous retirement package Sandusky got, it looks more and more like the subtext was, "Hey, buddy, we know you rape young boys, so if we give you all these perks will you stop doing it as part of our program?"

As for JoePa coaching the Nebraska game, I don't think Penn State officials realize how irreparably damaging it will be for the country to see 100+ cutaways of Paterno sitting in the press box. Their institutions brand, or whatever's left of it, is about to completely evaporate.

Bingo.

In terms of Penn State officials realizing how bad things are, they have already shown they're clueless.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

I am torn on this. I've tried to put myself in JoePa's shoes. How close do you think he was to this guy he coached as a player and coached with for 3 or 4 decades? I try to think if these allegations came up about a friend of mine. I would be very close to the situation. Maybe Joe felt to be fair he should let someone else deal with it. Then they come to him saying they find no wrong doing. Maybe Joe even talked to him and he denied or even came up with some sort of excuse (I'm not buying it but... remember this is a very close friend). So, his upper management has cleared his friend of wrong doing, but he is still suppose to turn him in for something he doesn't know to be true. What if he did that and it wasn't true??? He would have lost one of his closest friends. Maybe he just felt too close to the situation and thought someone else could better rectify the situation. Obviously he made the wrong choice, but playing devils advocate here.... Put yourself in his shoes and it was someone very, very close to you. BTW... why didn't the guy (who happens to still be at PSU) that originally reported this to Joe go to the cops???

Unfortunately, it's looking more and more like Paterno was aware of the accusations all the way back to 1998. It's bad enough to ignore one incident. It's abhorrent to ignore a pattern.
