Kiffin has said this over and over. He hasn't put a time table on the team returning to being really good. He has said "we will be good, when we are good". He hasn't put a number on wins, publicly anyway.

I think Kiffin knows it will take time. He has said USC was 5-7 their first year there. Bama was 6-6, regular season under Saban in year one.

I think the fan base has put the expectations there, not the coaches. After the win over WKU everyones hopes sky rocketed. We beat them they way we should have beat them, the way nearly any SEC team should have beat them.

I think all the freshmen CLK is playing shows that his expectations aren't ridiculous.
Kiffin also said that his team would be the most prepared team in the country, they would not be outworked, he has the best coaching staff in the country, his father is the best defensive coach in the country, they would sing Rocky Top all night after beating Florida, etc, etc, etc. He's been sticking his foot in his mouth all summer and everyone but the UT fan base sees him as a big joke. Not only is it the fault of the UT fan base for believing all the stuff this idiot was spewing all off season, but's its Kiffin's fault for employing this strategy of promoting the "T" like he did all summer and letting his words cash checks his butt couldn't cash.

That's the first step, after recruiting difference-makers. And, when you do it, you will lose games as a result...

But Lane will still have people talking about Tennessee, maybe not in the most positive way though. :)
+1

Kiffin reasoned this summer that he made all those ludicrous statements to get people talking. I hadn't thought about it until I saw your post Bayout but, could Lane Kiffin's strategy be to get mercy ruled by Florida and lose 8 games while the Vol fan base cannibalizes itself? That would get Tennessee talked about on Sportscenter! I mean, no such thing as bad publicity...right?:pDT_ura1:

Kiffin also said that his team would be the most prepared team in the country - this team has been much more prepared and much more physical than they had been the last few years under Fulmer. I know after seeing the UCLA game you will laugh at that. Outside of QB play the team has been good. Interceptions in 3 straight series will kill any team.

, they would not be outworked, - it is very debatable on who the hardest working staff in the country is. There is stories of this staff sleeping in their offices. Or game planning until 2 or 3 am and then back at it at 6 am. I believe they are one of the hardest working staffs in the country.

he has the best coaching staff in the country - Top to bottom it is one of the best. Of course, Kiffin is going to think his staff is the best. What coach is not going to think the staff he has assembled is one of the best?

his father is the best defensive coach in the country - and you claim he is not one of the best?

they would sing Rocky Top all night after beating Florida - OK, not much I can say here.

When you start comparing and trying to pick the best in the country it is all debatable. You guys are going to say Saban is the best coach in the country. Many others are going to say Meyer. If you go west, many are going to say Carroll. There is no right answer when you compare things like this.

Kiffin has assembled one of the best staffs in the country. They have recruited like crazy so far. He landed a class that went from 22nd or 23rd under Fulmer to a top 10 class in 2009. Right now according to Scout we sit at #3. I don't think you can laugh at the recruiting the UT staff has done so far.

We have possibly one of the worst game day QBs in the history of the SEC that was a 4*(#2 pro style out of HS) coming out of HS and could have went to a number of schools.

The cupboard was left bare with Fulmer. The OL has 4 seniors (I believe) with not much behind them. We had 2 OL commits in 2007 and 3 in 2008.

In 09 we had 3 more, right now for the 2010 class we have 3...hopefully with a few more to come.

It took Saban 2 recruiting classes to make a big move. You guys were 7-6 his first season. I don't expect UT to go 12-2 next year, as the OL will be less experienced than it is now. I won't be surprised to see Bray named starter during fall camp next year. He is supposed to enroll in January and go through the spring.

I don't think Kiffin can truly be judged after 2 games. Did you guys want Saban gone in year one when he lost to ULM? Whether you did or not, he has proven that he is much better than that loss.

Kiffin is more than likely going to start 1-2 at Tennessee. I think even if we end up going 3-9, or 4-8 he will be back for another year.

He has to have a chance to get his recruits on the field, barring any NCAA trouble of course, and see if he can do what he has said he can do.

This year could be rough...I think any logical fan sees that. He inherited a 5-7 football team with a couple of bad QBs. It appears that these QBs can't be magically turned into a Bradford, McCoy, or Tebow...heck, right now I would settle for Eric Ainge or even a Ric Clausen.

I don't think Kiffin can truly be judged after 2 games. There was a team in 2007 called Louisiana-Monroe that sent the Tide to a 1-2 record, was you guys ready to run Saban out of town at that point? Whether you was or not, he has proven that he is much better than that 1-2 start of his first season.

Look man, I won't try to argue with you point for point. In fact, you make some good points. However, the real problem Lane has is that his record as a college HC was 0-0 when he took the job.

Programs with alumni bases like UT or Bama shoudn't hire coaches w/o proven track records. When we lost to La. Monroe, Saban could tell everyone to pipe down b/c he had a MNC.

Kiffin may well revive UT...if he has the gravitas to survive 2-3 really down years.

I agree with you.

I admit, Kiffin wasn't my pick to replace Fulmer. He was Hamilton's pick and he has done some good things so far. He has most everyone excited about UT football more than they have been in years.

Your last sentence says it all...he may have to survive a couple of bad seasons. I am not so sure the fan base and more importantly the boosters will allow that. If this season turns out really bad, the pressure is going to build all year long on him. He may end up only getting 2 really bad years. There is really no free pass in a top notch SEC program.

That said, this recruiting they are doing MUST pay dividends quickly....like by next year.

As a fan it is going to suck to have to wait another year to see things hopefully start getting better. I want to see the 09 class be at the top now...and that simply is not going to happen.
