awesome!

where did you learn to do all the electrical stuff? any good advice for a novice that would like to learn?

i do all i can with my stuff as far as wiring and what not, but i don't fool around with the insides of an amp unless a pot is bad or a jack or something. i would like to be able to make my own tube amps one day. i know of several guys in Alabama now that are making custom amps that kick butt. i envy them.

i am also a tube enthusiast. i started playing guitar about 12 years ago and after my first few amps i realized that the guitar's sound and power output work with tubes so much better than solid state. i don't really mind solid state for other stuff, but for a guitar's sound... "there can be only one" tubes are the way (unless you're playing death metal maybe... and in that case, who cares what you sound like?!?!!!! )

Books are indespensible for working on tube amps. Get all of Gerald Webber's books, they are gold also his instructional tapes are great visual help. Gerald Webber owns Kendrick Amps one of the high end designer amps. Gerald is also someone I casually know and he will talk to you on the phone if you have a problem. He helped me with the presence control addition on the VC clone. Gerald also sells parts and hand built guitars. Billy Gibbons is a big fan (friend) of his. I have played through Kendrick, Matchless and Top Hat amps and it would be tough to pick just one but the Kendrick sure has a lot of tone. They are all hand built.
Fender has an amp book out with schematics and specs. I think it is still in print, so does Marshall. The early amps, if you take a real close look are mostly variations of either the Fender delux or Fender Bassman amp. A few of the old Gibson and Valco/Supro amps were cool. Jimmy Page used an old Supro and I wish I had a nickle for every guitar solo that was recorded through a Fender Champ. Marshall has a book also and there is an Ampeg book. Truthfully, Ampeg amps are a nightmare inside. Fender and Marshall are very easy to get around inside. Some of the Vox amps are a bit tight especially the AC50 heads. The biggest plus for the Ampegs are their toughness. I have a friend who plays in a church band through an old Ampeg reverb combo and a Gibson Switchmaster. I swear he can sound like Steve Howe at times.
There are also some websites with schematics. If you google around you can find them. I can help you find online parts and stuff if you need any help.
