Re: Oklahoma dismisses coveted recruit Jarboe in wake of Internet video

I have to humbly disagree with those that want to give Stoops respect for the way he handled this one. I personally think they had no choice, they had to boot the kid.

The AJC version states this kid was expelled from school for bringing a gun on campus. Why didn't OU boot him at that point?

Yeah, the initial report was it was over the rap video but I believe he actually got arrested recently and the rap video was just part of his departure not the reason for it.

Stoops has taken the high ground on several occasions in the last few years, but he always seems to do so when he has no choice. I think what Stoops is really good at, is realizing WHEN he has no wiggle room, & has the fortitude to go ahead & make the decision. By doing so, he turns the outcome (public perception) in his favor. IMO it shows a certain strength of character that the weaker ones lack. ;) IOW, if you know you're gonna take a hit & there's no way to avoid it, at least try to fall FORWARD!

D-man, we are very proud of the way Bob has handled such situations but in this case, many out here were wondering why we offered the kid in the first place.
Really? I wasn't aware that he had any baggage back when I watched him play in one of those all-star games on tv earlier in the year, however I was mildly surprised that he wasn't dismissed, or that the scholly offer wasn't rescinded, right after the gun incident and arrest in Georgia several months ago, but I figured that was Bob doing due diligence in wanting all the facts and waiting for the kid to at least set foot on campus before taking any action.

I disagree. I can imagine quite a few coaches that would have kept him on the team, even some that would have let him play this year. Dismissing was clearly a ZERO tolerance move, and I honestly don't think there are that many coaches out there who wouldn't have thought up some way to keep such a highly touted recruit. I don't think a lot of OU fans or administration would have given him flak for something short of dismissal that still "taught him a lesson."

Re: Oklahoma dismisses coveted freshman WR Josh Jarboe in wake of Internet video

In the wake of this story I had to see the YouTube video of J. Jarobe. He was talking like he had a mouthful of mashed potatoes and his ebonics were possibly in a completely different dialect from anything I have ever heard. I cannot believe anyone would have recruited this young man after speaking to him. Someone might be inquired to look into how this kid qualified to get into the university in the first place. Academically I would love to meet his teachers from high school and ask exactly how he graduated. When a young man of this intelligence qualifies at a D1 school and no one asks questions.... WOW!

Re: Oklahoma dismisses coveted freshman WR Josh Jarboe in wake of Internet video

Jarobe didn't have a gun at OU, the ESPN article said it was at his high school ...

Jarboe, ranked 13th on ESPN's list of top high school players last season, was sentenced in May to two years' probation and 80 hours of community service for carrying a gun on the grounds of his high school in Decatur, Ga. An assistant principal caught him there with a pistol in his possession in the school parking lot.
I do understand why Jarboe was dismissed. He is already on probation for what happened at his high school and you best believe they gave him a chance by dropping his felony charges to a misdemeanor. BUT I don't agree he should have been dropped from the team, I do understand, but IMO, I think he should have at least been suspended. Rappin about shooting somebody is NOT a violation of probation, dude made a blanket statement. Was is stupid ... yes. But at the end of the day, I don't think it's that deep. Dude is just proving that he is what he is ... a teenager.

I heard the track on Youtube, and in all honesty, I think stuff has been blown out of proportion. Most of the track didn't make sense cause dude can't rhyme!!! I was more at awe at trying to figure out what the heck he was trying to say than being surprised over the content of his freestyle. lol

It's just like the Shaq situation, yea, both of the tracks were ridiculous, but losing your ability to be an official of the law over a stupid (and I do me stupid) freestyle? Come on!

Shaq and J.J. received enough punishment for their action simply by making fools of themselves for their horrible rhyming skills. lol

But back to J.J., I tend to think the reason he was dismissed is because he didn't see anything wrong with rapping about shooting somebody AND posting a video on youtube WHILE he's on probation for gun charges. The article notes that Stoops came up with his decision AFTER he met with J.J.

But it is what it is, and at the end of the day, it's a sad situation for the young man. I'm pretty sure he'll end up playing somewhere, but someone needs to talk to him for real.

and BTW ... there's no such thing as EBONICS.

Re: Oklahoma dismisses coveted freshman WR Josh Jarboe in wake of Internet video

I am fully aware of that! (referring to the EBONICS comment), it was a joke dealing with my age I suppose. When I cant understand 9 of 10 words coming out of a young mans mouth it generally dates back to the EBONICS debate. At one time, people wanted EBONICS to be recognized as its own language. Ebonics, as a classroom elective and full high school credit, was slated to be a option in public schools. It is a absolute ridiculous light to portray oneself as a college athlete, professional or anyone else for that matter. Just my opinion but outside of McDonalds it will be very difficult for that young man to find a profession. In my household that type of language as well as thought process is not accepted. It makes me sad that a young man cannot realize that he represents his family, friends, community, etc. when he speaks. Heck, in my home you still get in trouble for putting your elbows on the table while eating. It's a slippery slope for the youth of the United States.
It reminds me of the movie Airplane when the gentleman became ill on the plane and he spoke "Jive" (aka. cromagnon version of todays EBONICS) and a translator was needed to understand him. I guess I need a translator.

"Chicka blee blood wass on!" was my favorite line in the movie and I have no idea what it meant.

VT22, I do understand your point. Didn't mean any offense by the statement, just want folks to understand that the rationale behind Ebonics makes no sense.

Not trying to change this thread into a convo on Ebonics but, the words being used by young people that relate to hiphop culture is and have always been English "slang".

I mean, what other dialect or slang used in the U.S. has been offically been labeled a language in order to reach students?

It was a group of people that got together and failed to remember that it is slang and said, well since this "dialect" or "slang" is so prevalent among young Blacks, lets call it a "language" and utilize it to teach so we can "reach" them.

They may have had good intentions with the idea, but the motivation is truly flawed. There was no need to change the methods of teaching, that's not the problem ... the problem is why aren't the children being reached?

OK, back to the J.J discussion ...

BAMAMICH I did not take offense and think we are on the same page after your last post. That was very nicely put and I whole heartedly agree.

I do believe he'll be playing somewhere else. Maybe a D2 school but someone will still pick him up. I know where he won't be playing tho ...

The night before the dismissal, Bob had said he wasn't sure he should boot somebody for something they said. After meeting with Jarboe, something changed. IMO, Jarboe copped an attitude with Stoops, and Bob told him to hit the road. WR is a question mark this season with the Sooners, and Jarboe was going to see quite a bit of PT. Too bad, although I'm sure somebody will sign him, maybe Penn State?

He was just advocating for his second amendment rights to "shoot you up like a pool table". And the gun he carried into his high school wasn't his. We know this because he was charged with possession of a "stolen" weapon.

He could be a Florida Gator I think. Urban Meyer took 6'4", 310lb. lineman Ronnie Wilson back on the team. He didn't rap about it or tuck a pistol in his waistband, though.

He fired off a few rounds from his handy AK-47 in downtown Gainesville.

The gun incident happened in high school, not at OU. Here's the thing: After barely dodging a felony charge on the gun incident and being made aware that he would be on a very short leash at OU, he put himself in bad situations several times, the vid being only the culmination of a series. I call it terminal stupidity. I wish him well wherever he lands but he has no one to blame but himself.
