That and the fact multiple schools used the image of Colonel Reb against Ole Miss in terms of recruiting. It was a detriment to them. So, political correctness has now made a rebel into a black bear. Nice.
Ole Miss Rebels! Roar!

Just trying to clear up the confusion that some people have in thinking Ole Miss is now going to be called the Ole Miss Bears. They might have a bear as a mascot (Just like we have an Elephant), but they will still be called the Rebels (Just like we have always been called the Crimson Tide). There is really no comparison between or organically occurring mascot situation and this ridiculousness.
"Miss Bears" -- I did see a mother black bear in the Smokies maul a little boy. Everybody stopped at one of those "bear jams" to look at the bear family and and people were feeding the cubs candy and the mother bear just snapped. True story! This is why the signs say "don't feed the bears."Just trying to clear up the confusion that some people have in thinking Ole Miss is now going to be called the Ole Miss Bears. As mentioned in another thread, a baby bear is something I never want to see in the wild because Mama isn't usually far behind."Miss Bears" -- I did some a mother black bear in the Smokies maul a little boy. So is the Miss. black bear mascot male or female?
and from the few run in's i've had, the babies are much more curious than the older ones so it is possible to get much closer to them.As mentioned in another thread, a baby bear is something I never want to see in the wild because Mama isn't usually far behind.
I'm pretty sure that's not true.Any way you look at it...a Black Bear being the mascot for the Rebels just doesn't make sense.
That's like calling yourselves the Stallions and having a cow for a mascot...lol
I know we have an Elephant and we're the Crimson Tide but at least there's a reason why because we were at one point the Red Elephants.
If they had really wanted a mascot that reflected Mississippi they would have chosen a Native American or Indian based mascot because half the towns in Mississippi and most all the waterways are named after Indian Tribes.
To me the perfect mascot would have been a guy dressed up like Geronimo and riding a horse. He was an Indian and he was definitely a Rebel.
Call him Chief Hotty Tod or something.
Make sense?
On target. I live in Mississippi and the towns next to me are Pascagoula(Indians), Biloxi(Indians) andI have been preaching the Indian thing for a while. Just get some tribe to sponsor it a la the Seminoles and you are golden. Indians even fought with the Confederacy.
Maybe they could create some story about how the black bear wandered onto the plantation in search of food and ended up eating Colonel Reb. The soul of Colonel Reb was too strong and took over the future actions of the bear. Therefore, the mascot looks like a black bear, but it has the soul of Colonel Reb. Hotty Toddy, black bear Rebels like to party! So from a white plantation owner to a black bear... geez, talk about going from one extreme to the other.
They are changing the image for the sole purpose of modern political correctness. I very seriously doubt that they would lose Colonel Reb and the problem that association brings in order to have an Indian name and all of the problems that would create.Any way you look at it...a Black Bear being the mascot for the Rebels just doesn't make sense.
