the fact is she is a columnist and is perfectly within her rights to write what she did. there's no libel there...if there was a lawsuit would already have been filed. plus the player in question is a starting qb at a d-1 school in the big 12.

Has anybody said that she doesn't have the right to do what she did? I haven't seen it, and Gundy certainly didn't say that. But just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that you should. There are things called responsibility and integrity, both of which are very lacking in today's media.

Just wondering out loud, but who isn't talking about it. Colin has made it the center point of his day, I'm sure Rome will say something on it, even the local sports shows are on it.

One thing is for sure, there's gonna be a split between people thinking it was the right thing to do and those who think he's a flaming idiot.

Jess is right though the media is gonna go all out to get this guy now, he's called out one of their own right or wrong they want him now.

agree, just b/c you can do something does not mean you should. however, this lady got what she wanted. the story may originally have been read by say 1-2 dozen people. but now, b/c of the coach's response its been read by hundreds of thousands. again, some things are better left unstirred/ignored. also, lets not get into the debate about the lack of responsibility and integrity in the media. that paints too broad a stroke. none of us are perfect and we should not expect any member of the media, let alone a columnist whose job it is to opine, to be.

people can bash the columnist all they want to. even say she's mean, ugly, whatever. the fact is she is a columnist and is perfectly within her rights to write what she did. there's no libel there...if there was a lawsuit would already have been filed. plus the player in question is a starting qb at a d-1 school in the big 12. true OK state and not OK but still a major d-1 program in a major conference. criticism comes with that kind of territory....coach gundy has to understand that and by acting basically like an overprotective parent thrust this story into the national limelight. which did more disservice to the football player than the original column. stuff like this is best left unstirred b/c it is irrelevant unless you try to make a big deal out of it like coach gundy did.
I disagree. This shows just how ridiculous college athletics have become. Your local newspaper wouldn't do this to a local high school athlete, why should it be any different for a college amateur? College athletics have become such a big-money, commercialized endeavor that we've all lost sight about the guys who are sacrificing their body and time to play for a college education. If you want to call out a pro athlete who is paid to perform, that's one thing; this is quite a bit different. Gundy is not going to survive this because the media will paint this as a "meltdown", but I think the media should point the finger at themselves...that is where the real meltdown is.

Mabe I'm missing something but the article is really, really, tame to me. Living here in Norman, I can confirm that the OSU coaches have spent all summer talking up the offense and Reid. Local sports radio guys (The Animal) have called the Big XII "embarassing" and OSU's lack of production after all that hype has certainly contributed to that kind of opinion. The OSU staff was even referring to the offense as one of the best in the country during August. Add to that the millions upon millions of $ that they just dumped into the facilities and I think it's easy to see that the staff there is under enormous pressure this year to 'turn the corner' and really start to compete in the Big XII.

Just for the record, Jenni Carlson is no Paul Finebaum. She is a columnist, not a reporter, and I read her often and have never found anything that I would term controversial in the past. Shes not a shock-jock wannabe.

As for the article itself, what exactly did she say that was so bad? That Reid considered transferring? I'd bet you a 100$ that that is true. That his mom fed him chicken? Well, she did. That he lacks heart/fire? Well, he's sitting on the bench right now and not because of injury and not because the #2 is outplaying him by leaps and bounds. Gundy says Reid is a kid that "does everything right". So whats the problem? No one is asking that question anymore because they're all talking about mommas and whether or not its OK to say that someone gets fed by their momma.

Oh yeah, and lets not forget who took the article to Gundy in the first place. Reids momma.

And for all of you who are cheering Gundy now, where were you when it was Mitch Mustains mom in the headlines? She's a mom. Didn't she have a right to defend her baby, too? Guess its OK to bash moms and sons when you don't agree with what they're doing but not OK in other cases. Typical sheep hypocrisy if you ask me.

Imo, this will be damaging for OSU. They look like a program out of sorts with a coach throwing a hissy fit over his mommas boy QB who he benched with no real explanation as to why.

OSU is just AU in another state and I doubt any of you would be showing the same support for Gundy if it was Tubbs and an AU player in this exact same spot.
I agree with you. I read the article a few times and I saw nothing wrong with it. It was not even an interesting read and that maybe because I am not a resident of OK. It seems like the coach was looking for someone to crucify and found his target. Some see the coach’s performance and lock in on him ‘defending’ his player. He loses me when he starts attacking the reporter. Unless I am wrong, and I could be, she is actually an opinion writer. I think the story is a moot point now. It’s his behavior that is the issue. He handled this poorly.

Do any of you know that Les Miles was not allowed to hire his own OC when he was at OSU? Mike Gundy was forced on him, and they battled for the entire time Miles was at OSU. T Boone Pickens runs the athletic department at OSU. Gundy is Boone's guy. He's poured nearly 300 million dollars into that program, and Gundy is feeling the heat big time. I also like a coach that has his player's backs, but Gundy has caused all this stuff to happen. Carlson called him, and he doesn't like it. This deal isn't over, stay tuned. Look for Carlson to put her side of the story out today.
Excuse me? But the last time I checked, Mike Holder was the Athletic Director at OSU.

So, in Gundy's words, "Get your facts straight."

It's nice that the guy defends his players, but I thought he went overboard and made himself look foolish. This guy needs to be a lot more worried about his team than the papers, too.

While I tend to agree with what Gundy said, I disagree totally with how he did it. His actions in acting like a "child" completely discredits what he had to say. Most people now, are talking about how he said what he said, and not the content of his statements.. I hope those statements are not lost in the hoopla over his manner.

I tend to agree that there is probably more going on than Gundy just protecting his player. While it would be nice to think that a coach would take a reporter to task that much for criticizing a player, I'm too cynical to believe that that is ALL that is going on. However, Jess' statements and the one below (which I agree with) are what really concerns me. The media has so much power that is largely unchecked, they can decide to exact revenge on Gundy and there will be little or nothing he can do about it. Maybe Gundy deserves it, but how many people has it happened to that didn't deserve it? With the media often appearing to have its own agenda, and the centralization of ownership of media outlets, I fear for where we are headed. I know the media has always wielded a great deal of power, but maybe I'm being naive, but I think in the past they have exercised it more responsibly and been less partisan in their actions.

Jess is right though the media is gonna go all out to get this guy now, he's called out one of their own right or wrong they want him now.

Regardless of who is the real culprit in this situation, Coach Gundy absolutely laid it on the media member in question and I love it. If these writers feel the need to criticize defenseless amateur atheletes, they better be handle the same thing in return.
Now thats just plain funny, I don't care who you are. 50% of the people at boards just like this one couldn't live up to this standard.

My problem with the whole thing is how they are portraying the quarterback in question as a "kid" that needs to be protected. I'm sorry... but you stop being a kid in this society at 18. You are legally an adult, and we need to start acting as such. Shielding him from the big bad world is only going to do bad things.

Long story short - he's old enough to swim in the deep end. If he starts to sink, well, it's his responsibility to pull himself back up... not someone looking over his shoulder.
