My problem with the whole thing is how they are portraying the quarterback in question as a "kid" that needs to be protected. I'm sorry... but you stop being a kid in this society at 18. You are legally an adult, and we need to start acting as such. Shielding him from the big bad world is only going to do bad things.

Long story short - he's old enough to swim in the deep end. If he starts to sink, well, it's his responsibility to pull himself back up... not someone looking over his shoulder.
Yah, I'm sure we all were mature enough at 18 years of age to shrug off public articles belittling and berating us.

Yeesh.

Typical, now she wants pity for crossing the line and calling out a college kid.

Boo-hoo.

Of course her 'credibility' was attacked, what little she had to begin with after choosing to be a 'journalist' as her chosen profession. She wrote that garbage article, now she gets to live with the consequences.

do as I say not as I do comes to mind.

I agree with Stoops' comment in the article:

"Everybody has a remark on everything we do, and that's OK," Stoops told reporters Tuesday. "As soon as a coach has an opinion on what any of you do, then you can't do that. I don't know why that would be. We're entitled to our opinions as well. So that's it. I've got nothing else to say about it."

Seems like some in the media like to criticize but can't handle any criticism directed back at them.

"Media groups, including the Football Writers Association of America and the Association for Women in Sports Media, have issued statements critical of Gundy."

Surprise, surprise. As Jess pointed out, now all of the writers will get together and gang up on Gundy until they drive him out of a job for daring to criticize one of them.

Criticism is one thing. What Gundy did to the reporter far exceeds criticism
If a reporter ever acted like Gundy did, they would lose their jobs almost immediately.

I disagree. This shows just how ridiculous college athletics have become. Your local newspaper wouldn't do this to a local high school athlete, why should it be any different for a college amateur? College athletics have become such a big-money, commercialized endeavor that we've all lost sight about the guys who are sacrificing their body and time to play for a college education. If you want to call out a pro athlete who is paid to perform, that's one thing; this is quite a bit different. Gundy is not going to survive this because the media will paint this as a "meltdown", but I think the media should point the finger at themselves...that is where the real meltdown is.
I agree. Reporters can hound Britney Spears and write about her trip to the grocery store all they want because she's a public figure and that's the life she's chosen. These guys are NOT paid and are not allowed to be public figures or endorse products or reap the benefits that a public figure receives. These are college students. Yes, they are athletes as well and if you want to write about their athletic achievements that's fair game, but when a reporter starts delving into the personal life of a student athlete, that is LOW.

Gundy didn't handle the situation well, but wouldn't it be sweet justice if someone tailed Jenni Carlson for a few weeks with a camera and wrote an article casting all of her day to day activities in a questionable light. It's easy to tear someone down. When an adult with significant resources does it to an 18 year old college student, that makes them a BULLY.

What seems to most people to be the most damaging part of the article was the quote that his mother was feeding him chicken. Do we even know if that was true? Did she just bring chicken in a tupperware because that could be considered feeding him chicken. Did she hand him the drumstick? Maybe that's what she meant by feeding him chicken. Or maybe his mom was just joking around with him trying to embarrass him on purpose and shoved a piece of chicken in his face.

This kid doesn't need Jenni Carlson trying to interpret his 18 year relationship with his mother for the rest of the world! Jenni Carlson isn't Freud.

There are plenty of possibilities that could be described with the phrase "feeding him chicken", but Jenni Carlson wants to paint that picture of (for lack of a better phrase) pseudo-breastfeeding. That's not necessarily how it went down though.

Reid is 21 years old, and he will be 22 in December. I think when one can legally by alcohol in this country, we need to stop treating them with "kid gloves".

Uhmm... can you explain what the ability to buy alcohol has what to do with whether or not a journalist should be allowed to character assassinate a college student?

Public figures know going in they will have to give up parts of their private lives. College students aren't public figures. These are kids trying to get an education. You're saying they should be fair game for whatever gossip column media blitz comes their way fair or unfair? Well, I guess it's OK because they can have a drink afterwards.

I wouldn't think it was fair if a biased lens sought me out and was focused on my personal life and used to cast dispersions on my character while I was busy trying to get an education so I wouldn't wish it on someone else. It's just simple decency.

Granted the entire article isn't THAT bad, but it's still pretty low.

My whole point in saying that is that he is NOT a kid. He is an adult. My whole problem with this story is how some are trying to shield the quarterback as if he is some small child.

I agree--- i would be more upset with my coach calling me a "child" over and over again than what that reporter said
Not a child, a college student. These student athletes shouldn't have to worry about their personal lives being pried into and put on display the way it would be done to Brangelina everytime a hack journalist decides they need a circulation boost. A certain amount of common decency should be required to be a journalist. If you think taking pot shots at what you perceive to be the relationship between a college student and his mother is on the up and up... I've got no reply to that.

Granted the shots weren't "devastating" and there was probably nothing in the article that was outright grounds for legal action, but it shows really poor judgment and questionable motives/character on the journalists part. It also shows that she's probably at best a tabloid journalist and by no means an ethical and professional journalist.

Just because she ain't wrong don't mean she's right.

And like I said, I'm not supporting the coach's actions.

To the right of the button you're using currently to quote people is another button with a picture of quotation marks. Click that button on all the posts you want to quote then click the quote button and you're good to go.
