Let's see.......
The last time we had a top five recruiting class and had a stockpile of four and five star recruits was when Dubose was here. What happened next??? Probation, not to mention that approximately only 65% of those "recruits" ended up in school. Of those 65%, only a small percentage ever took a snap for the Tide. Signing a five star recruit is not "always" as advertised. In the Dubose reign, it meant taking a lot of chances on potential academic casualties and maybe contributing to unethical recruiting tactics.
Recruiting is a game that we all love to watch and discuss, but we know only a little of what goes into analyzing a recruit and how coaches decide who to offer. The best way to look at what Shula can do is to look at the field today. We now have playmakers that we haven't had in a long time. Yes, they're young, but that's the entire point. D.J. Hall, Keith Brown, Aaron Johns, Justin Britt, Simeon Castille, Ezekiel Knight are all true freshmen. A couple more years of signing guys like the ones mentioned above, we'll definitely be competing for a national championship.
While we're on the topic of recruiting, let's take a look at the "NFL" system that Coach Shula, as well as others, have brought to the college ranks. It is my belief that because of Shula's history of coaching in the NFL, we'll not only run a pro style offense (like we were before Brodie got hurt), but we'll recruit the type of athletes that best work in that system and they'll look to seek us out because they know there is a future in the NFL if they perform in that system. This doesn't even take into account the connections that a Mike Shula would have in the NFL when the time comes for kids to pursue that option. Miami, Virginia, and USC come to mind when you think of former pro coaches joining the college ranks and instilling a pro style philosophy. We all know how well they're doing and you can look on the field to see the type of athletes we might can expect over the next few years.
