our 2005 class doesn't look very talented statistically

I know many of you hate the star rated system but I for one look at it and like it. Look at must of the top teams and they have nothing but star players' that were 4 and 5 stars'. thats' why thier playing in big bowl game and we are not( I know we have been on probation but I am refering to the greater bowl games). You look at all the teams like Tenn., fl., gor,and lsu. This current class are nothing but manly two stars and a couple of three stars' why are Shula and staff not recruiting these 4 and five star players harder? One thing is for sure if Shula doesn't start coaching with some attitude this season and we keep losing we might see alot more 1 stars and two stars. So far last years class looks really talented because many were ranked four stars and three stars. :biga2:

i think/hope you worded that wrong. statistical analysis of each player and the friggin star-rating system are two completely different things.

not sure how old you are, but you'll learn that those stars don't mean squat.

We are not playing in a bowl because we have NO depth.
I didn't realize bowl bids had been extended already.

Those stars have had a direct correlation over the years in national championship teams, those that finish ranked in the top 10 in recruiting do win more national championships...... I saw that in an ESPN article before the season began, recruiting rankings shocked me in that scenario, but it was true.

I would have to disagree

Looking at the final rankings on Rivals since 2002 and the teams that have won the NC since then, stars/ rankings really do not mean all that much. 2002 Ok won the NC.....wasn't even in the top 10 in recruiting the year before or the year before that. Ohio State won it in 2002...and they were barely in the top 10 in recruiting the 2 years before that. Last year we had CO-national champs...LSU and USC. USC didn't even show up on the recruiting top 10 in 2002...2003 they are #3 and 2004 they ranked #1 (National Championship for USC = Soft Pac 10 schedule). LSU was #1 in 2003 and #2 last year. Well look how LSU is doing a year removed from winning a National title and being ranked #1 and #2 in recruiting the last 2 years. UcheaT was #2 in 2002 .....where have they ended up the last 2 season when it was all said and done?? I think there are a lot of deciding factors that plays a role in winning a National Championship, recruiting being a small piece of the puzzle! Thats just my opinion though.

As far as saying this upcoming class is not good because they are not mostly 4 and 5 star guys is purely ridiculous. And trust me all these 5* kids will eventually stop going to USC, Texas, and LSU........you can only have some many 5* WR's on your team before the next class starts to get smart and realize playing time might not come as easy going to that particular school. Sorry if I am rambling.......lack of sleep! :biggrin2:

You get the 4 & 5 stars when you win, the kids that are highly ranked want to walk into a winning program and go to major bowls every year, and who could blame them?!!! why not!!!

I'm sure shula is recruiting them hard but he's not going to be very successful while his teams get destroyed week after week.

Last year there was an abundance of talent in the state of Alabama which helped us to land some good recruits. Not the same this year.

Look which programs land the 4 and 5 star recruits... (USC, LSU, Miami, and OU) Those are programs that have won a NC sometime in the past 4 years. We are not there yet, but I am confident we will be someday, but it will take time.... Until then it is quite unrealistic to expect us to sign many 4-5 star recruits

JMO, but stars aren't what they are cracked up to be. In my opinion, a 5 star recruit has probably just about maxed his potential. He will get a little better in college, but not much. Don't get me wrong though, he's still probably an amazing player. These 2 and 3 star recruits have tons of room to grow. And by the time they are juniors and seniors, they just might be better than those 4 or 5 star recruits.

For those who like the stars, last year's class had 4 4-star signees; 2 of which did not make b/c of academics. The other 2 were Chris Turner and Justin Britt, who have been fairly good so far. The main contributors from last year's class are all 2 or 3 star players. And last year's class was ranked 15th. If 3 stars means that we get another Simeon Castille, Keith Brown, DJ Hall, or Zeke Knight, then keep 'em comin. :biga:

Oh, and if they keep the same ratings, then Fanney will be a 3, Washington a 4, McCall a 3, Drew Davis a 2, and JPW a 2.

there will always be some 2 and 3 stars that turn into great players, and 4 and 5s that are complete busts, but overall it is a pretty good predictor of college success. i love shula and everything but i think croom could have brought in alot of the 4 and 5 stars weve been missing recently

...

Usually you can judge a recruit by which schools have offered. I don't think any teams in the top 5 have offered Burnthall or Reamer. Maybe they will turn out to be all-world, but I think it's too risky for Shula to recruit players who probably won't contribute for another 3 years down the road. Alabama needs help immediately.

Recruiting ratings

rightwinger is about as close to what I feel on how to gauge a recruit. I read on the LSU board where Saban offers based on film study and camp results and rarely bothers with rating services. That said he still ends up with mostly 4 and 5 * recruits. CMDumbose on the other hand did not bother with much scouting and offered on ratings as in A Means. The best way to explain this is that Sam Dansby(father of ex AU lb is a patient of mine) was on the staff at a school in Montgomery that scouted AM. Anyway,he said AM was not very fast or quick and had poor effort....in other words not worth recruiting.Yes guy's we were set up with AM,but only a really dumb staff would have taken the bait. However, I regress........Summer camps and actual scouting is the best.

i trust the coaches have done a fine job of evaluating the talent, and really believe in these young men to offer them a scholly, but i agree i am not very impressed with the class we are putting together.....it makes you wonder why no one else had any interest in the kids but perhaps a uab or southern miss.....oh well maybe they can coach them up.........Roll Tide

2 early 2 judge. He has what appears to be a good class of freshman this year. Also we need to look at families like the castilles and britts to keep up the good work, maybe
another goode or Hannah family or one of Shula's pro buddies children.

Recruiting with an eye on the recommendations of the recruiting guru's is a recipe for a quick exit as a HC.

For one thing, it shows that a coach has little confidence in his ability to judge talent and potential.

For another, it indicates a lazy coach.

Both are recipes for a short tenure as a HC.

AMEN! Anybody who puts stock in these recruiting services is a little crazy.

Potential and inteligence

Potential and inteligence are often overlooked by recruiting services. A college coach must make sure that he recruits a TEAM player who is willing and able to better the team. Just because someone was successful in highschool they may not make it in college.

I agree with you TommyMac...

I don't think any of us have right judge Shula's recruiting until we at least get closer to signing day. I would take our group of Freshman ANY day over the highly rated recruits with a highly rated ego to match. The last thing we need to let our recruits read about from a fan site is how little confidence we have in our coach and player's. Swapping coach's every other year is another reason why we don't have depth and stablity we need. Shula isn't after that big name, he is after a player who can contribute now, the player that has the character to take us back to the level we are all used to. I don't think Croom was our answer and after watching the Maine and UAB game...come on. For all the people who want Shula to "coach with some emotion".....join Crimson Tradition and watch how oour players respond to him in the locker room and during practice. Folks, this generation isn't "old school", you can't rant and rave and put on a show and have their respect. Give Shula time and remember that your opinion here may help a kid decide to go some place else.

Let's see.......

The last time we had a top five recruiting class and had a stockpile of four and five star recruits was when Dubose was here. What happened next??? Probation, not to mention that approximately only 65% of those "recruits" ended up in school. Of those 65%, only a small percentage ever took a snap for the Tide. Signing a five star recruit is not "always" as advertised. In the Dubose reign, it meant taking a lot of chances on potential academic casualties and maybe contributing to unethical recruiting tactics.

Recruiting is a game that we all love to watch and discuss, but we know only a little of what goes into analyzing a recruit and how coaches decide who to offer. The best way to look at what Shula can do is to look at the field today. We now have playmakers that we haven't had in a long time. Yes, they're young, but that's the entire point. D.J. Hall, Keith Brown, Aaron Johns, Justin Britt, Simeon Castille, Ezekiel Knight are all true freshmen. A couple more years of signing guys like the ones mentioned above, we'll definitely be competing for a national championship.

While we're on the topic of recruiting, let's take a look at the "NFL" system that Coach Shula, as well as others, have brought to the college ranks. It is my belief that because of Shula's history of coaching in the NFL, we'll not only run a pro style offense (like we were before Brodie got hurt), but we'll recruit the type of athletes that best work in that system and they'll look to seek us out because they know there is a future in the NFL if they perform in that system. This doesn't even take into account the connections that a Mike Shula would have in the NFL when the time comes for kids to pursue that option. Miami, Virginia, and USC come to mind when you think of former pro coaches joining the college ranks and instilling a pro style philosophy. We all know how well they're doing and you can look on the field to see the type of athletes we might can expect over the next few years.
