Our defense is going to be straight up sick in 2009...

You seem to be saying the job is McElroy's next year, case closed. I'm not sure why you think the coaches are "no where near entrusting Star with the offense." That may well be the case if we are talking about the Sugar Bowl, but there's a lot of time between now and the season opener in 2009.

The coaches are very high on Star Jackson and that's a fact. I'm not saying Star will win the job, but earlier this week CNS was quoted as saying earlier this week there will be an open competition for the job.

McElroy does not have a lot of college game experience himself. He may win the job, but who is to say he will hang on to it? Star could win the job and who is to say he will hang on to it? There are a lot of uncertainties for us as QB next and we won't know how it's going to turn out until these guys get under center in front of 90,000 people in the stadium and millions of others watching on tv.

McElroy may very well win the job, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion at this point. :) McElroy is really smart and from all that I've read has an excellent understanding of the offense, but we don't know if that will translate to him being the starting QB next year from start to finish.

May the best man win the job.
All I'm saying is you guys are setting yourselves up for disappointment. To me it doesn't matter who starts as long as we win. But for alot of you it just HAS to be Star and he has a good chance of falling on his face. We might as well not even recruit a QB for atleast 3 yrs. since we have Star. Aj could in the next few yrs. be better than him, we just have to wait and see. RTR!

BamaBryan you and I actually think alike, it's just some on here go so over the top for him(Star) that nobody else has a chance. Anything can happen we just have to wait and see. I just have a friend who tells me a few things and I just think by that GMc is ahead. Star and AJ will get their chances though.

Bama had good injury luck in 2008, no doubt.

But that is not the real "story" of the Bama 08 season.

The real story is that Bama has a coach that motivate his players to excel, to expect more of themselves, to have the will to win and the will to prepare to win.

The real story is that Bama had players willing to do this and make themselves into a fine football team.

Luck helped because we were and are thin. However... all the injury luck in the world would not have turned this team around without the aforementioned attitude changes, made possible (and demanded) by Coach Nick Saban.

For me, that is "the story" of Bama football in 2008. And I'm and I suspect many others are happy to talk about it.
Something that was always absent during Mike Shula's two years of promise and potential... Oh well, if you play with fire, eventually you'll get burned...

I can't wait to see Cody with another year of strength training behind him. Josh Chapman always played well and is going to be a monster as well as Dareus (sp?):BigA: Don't forget Ivan Matchett at RB, he had high promise coming out of H.S.

I'm so happy that Bama is has a shut down defense, and next year's defense will be great.......
Hope they just shut Utah down in the Sugar Bowl..........:)

Never underestimate the importance of experience in playing in the SEC. The talent level is increasing dramtically; however, the depth in experience is still thin. The good news is that this staff knows how to handle that weakness.

All fans set themselves up for disappointment every year, and we were very fortunate with injuries this year. The difference between 7-5 and 10-2 can easily be one or two injuries or key turnovers. However, I believe 31 of our top 33 defensive players return next year. All of those guys have at least some experience on the field and will have another year in the strength and conditioning program. We will add in some very talented and athletic redshirt freshmen and some true freshmen to help depth even more. The defense should be absolutely fantastic. There are some holes to fill on the offensive side of the ball, but the overall level of talent continues to rise there. Our offensive line will probably fall-off a little bit, but I think we should be able to have the depth to have two solid lines, so the linemen should always be rested. I think two solid lines can replace one outstanding line without too much drop-off. If, and it is a big if, at least one of the QB's can step up and perform solidly, we should be an even better team in 2009. We shall see, but Coach Saban and his staff have me feeling confident again. I like this feeling.

That defense will be good enough to get Bama ranked in the top 10 preseason next year for sure by themselves. Questions on offense will probably keep us out of top5 consideration to start with but a big first game showing against Va. Tech like Bama did this past season against Clemson will get us in the top 5 quick!

I've been discussing this very topic over dinner for the past two days with family. I'm a bit torn about it. Bobby was great for leadership and I think the 3-4 set didn't really display his strengths (as he was a monster in the Joe Kines defense), but even though Rashad is just one player, replacing him is going to be HUGE!! I can think of at least 5 times when he bailed us out either by making a play or putting someone in the correct position to make a play. I like Mark Barron's athleticism, and if we get Rod Woodson on campus, I fear for the safety of anyone who's sent on a crossing pattern. But replacing his smarts and leadership in the defensive backfield at arguably the most important position is going to be tough.

But on the optimistic side, like I said if Woodson makes it to campus, he's on the field next year. He's an aboslutely violent football player (he's also an amateur boxer if that gives you any indication). I think BJ Scott will be great as a DB. And from the sounds of it, Chris Jackson is adjusting well to that side of it. Throw in the facts that we return our most effective pass rusher in Eryk Anders and that guys like Jerrell Harris, Marcel Dareus, Courtney Upshaw, Damion Square, and the like will be a year older and wiser in Saban's defense, and things are looking GREAT for our defense next season, but not so great for one Tyrod Taylor.

Entering the Spring , ....

I feel the first 6 players on the DL have the makings of an A-rated unit .
97 62 95
96 99 57

The Jack position looks to be in good shape with Fanney & Upshaw .

If Chris Jordan steps it up a bit , the LB positions will finally be 2 deep .
13 25 30
32 21 36

SS needs a reserve (Lester) to step up behind Woodall .
27
37

FS should become a positive between Barron & Sharrief . King provides depth .
4/26
20

CB could use a good Spring showing from Lawrence , Green or Rogers to give us a 4th guy who is reliable or , to step up and challenge Marquis Johnson .
3 28
8 24
23 15

There are endless guys who could factor into the Nickle & Dime rotation and Anders will continue to provide a rush off the edge in passing situations . In addition , Upshaw will probably get more situational looks paired with Anders .

On paper , it's a unit which obviously has the potential to be among the best in the nation but , the DL is really the only group which could sustain a serious injury to a starter without seeing a noticeable dropoff . Competent FS play along with Woodall & Hightower remaining healthy would look to be the most important keys to success in '09 for what could become the best defensive unit that we've seen wearing Crimson in quite some time . JOMO :)

:BigA: Ther are a lot of opinions on here and I must say I agree with most of them. I don't feel Bama will be as thin next year as they were this year. I am looking forward to next year. May not have quite as good a won - loss record or maybe they will. I think they will really be fun to watch if you are a Bama fan. I think they will be scarry if you are not a Bama fan !
