Our weakest link?

Would like to know what bama fans think that Bama's weakest link is? Personally, I think it's the OL. That's what REALLY has me concerned about this ensuing season. I've been praying for some real stud walk-ons or defections from other teams to help out, because we need linemen with experience as it takes longer for ol's to mature. Hopefully, the young guys will step it up a notch or two. RTR!!

I personally think the key to the season will be Ken Darby and Tim Castille. If these two are healthy, they may be able to find yardage "where there ain't any". Keeping DLs from laying their ears back and going after Brodie will be important. And an Upchurch or Ford hitting holes fast should help, so if they pass academically, there's another sigh of relief. We could also look for quick passses to Walker and our Team Receiver Extraordin-aire corps to supplant 2004's rendition of three yards and a cloud of dust.

I believe our 2005 defense, with its team speed, will be a scoring defense, so there's a probable cushion.

We are shaky on the OL, but I think there's enough poundage for a two second obstacle. CMS will have to make available adjustments. Stabler, Closner and Caldwell could be good this year, although I haven't been able to follow spring practice closely, so we should be able to protect Brodie's blind side. We've got a couple of possibilities of backfield blocking as well, and a balanced attack should help keep from telegraphing our intent.

That said, I'm really worried about the place kicking. Consistent 35 and in we don't have. I hope Friedman arrives early to campus and works his butt off, because he could be a key if Rhody and Christensen don't come through.

Kicking and punting. With close games (I expect several this fall), this area becomes larger than usual. While I worry about the OL, I have confidence in the coaching staff to design game plans around that type of weakness. On special teams, it's much harder IMO.

Weakest Link

I personally believe that our biggest weakness would have to be the o-line. On the other hand though it can be a huge suprise like the 2001 version. This is when Wesley Britt, Justin Smiley and Evan Mathis took over. A lot people wondered how three freshmen would protect Tyler and Andrew that year. I see a lot of similarities in this group. We desperately need them to come together because with them coming together to form a great unit this team can go places with the talented recievers and backs and a tremendous defense coming back with 10 starters.

You can not compare 2001 season to this season. In 2001, we played option with Watts. That alone takes a huge burden off of OL. What scares me this season is that we are putting two new faces on Brodie's blind side.

Let me get this straight. ;)

We have concerns about Brodie being injured again.

Offensive Line.

Concerns about the kicking game. (we won't be kicking except the punt)

Offensive Line. (1,2,3,punt)

Running backs. (last season their first move was dodging a defender)

Offensive Line.

A quote from Coach Con posted yesterday.

"It's going OK," said Connelly, who must replace three of the five starters on the line. "The guys are working hard. We're still in a lot of think-mode right now.

The season is made in the spring. If our OL is still in the "think mode" it translates to mistakes, missed assignments, etc.

My glass is still half full, don't get me wrong. I'm not pessimistic by nature, in fact have been labeled a "sunshine pumper" for years. However....I'm still in the "think mode" about my glass....

I have to agree with ya there. If our line is still "thinking" come gameday you expect Brodie on th sidelines with crutches after about the third or fourth game.

Gooood grief, we've had this problem ever since Stallings left (at least it seems that way). We've struggled with special teams for yrs. now. Wonder what's up. :conf3:

I don't know. It seems like we're one injury away (God forbid) from having another QB crisis on our hands.

Yeah, I know. I think that this year is going to be a nail biter. I sure hope not but if Brodie is injured this year, it will be a complete re-run of last years quarterback crisis. However, it seems that Coach Shula is getting JPW and MG into practice also, so hopefully they will e prepared if/when their numbers are called.
