over achievers

i've been following Bama football for a while and some of my favorite players are the ones that were not stars. a couple that come to mind are qb, david smiith and rb, murry hill,and i know there are so many more,..just curious aboout some other opinions

Jon Stevenson, John Causey, Jay Barker, Derrick Lassic, Tarrant Lynch, Martin Houston, Dennis Riddle, the list goes on. Maybe some of these players didn't necessarily overachieve, maybe just lived up to there abilities. But they all overcame various obstacles to succeed.

I loved watching Murray Hill bury some poor sap about five yards downfield with that big Crimson helmet.

I loved watching Joey Jones catch some balls that only Joey Jones knew he would catch.

I loved watching Jay Barker hand off for a 3 yd gain, pass for a 6 yd gain, then hand off again for first down yardage. That offense was butter.

I loved watching Howard Cross pull in a gamebreaker across the middle for that crucial third down conversion.

I loved listening to Major O. go over the top for a goal-line score on Saturdays when Dad made us work outside during the game. (He couldn't stand to see Alabama do anything wrong...still can't...he just can't watch.)

I loved hearing him tell of his college days, going to games... watching Johnny Musso run around and through everybody.

Some folks might not consider Johnny Musso an overachiever because he was a talented RB, but I do. To me, he exemplified what BAMA football is all about. Extraordinary results through extraordinary effort.

Paul Crane is another one, he had the unenviable task of following Lee Roy and he stepped up big-time. Course, just about all those undersized kids from those days overachieved. They had to.

Marcus "NightTrain" Spencer was always one of my favorites. Had a couple of classes with him also. I long for the day when we have a safety that brings the wood to opposing receivers like MS did.

I thought Gary Hollingsworth exemplified overachiever. That 1989 Ole Miss game was a treat, as was the UT game that same year. That fellow had to be the slowest QB ever (but managed a good scramble every now and then), but never seemed the least bit ruffled by anything going on around him.

I'm partial to Jay as well. He was overlooked for a scholarship until Stallings came in and happened to glance at a tape. He developed into one of the most reliable leaders our program has ever had.
