Re: Phil Sims confronts Desmond Howard about son at UT

does anyone here watch "Inside the NFL" on Showtime? if so you will know that Phil is a major .... um it rhymes with Stick.
I can think of two rhymes that would be suitable.

How could we ever again believe Desmond's analysis of anything related to football if said anything positive about the quarterbacking abilities of Chris Simms or Matt Simms?

I can appreciate Sims wanting to defend his sons honor, he is a father first. As for Howard, I do not feel he should have made this a public issue. To bring it out in public like this makes him sound like a drama queen.
Agreed. Althought the talking heads at the worldwide leader seem to make a habit out of this.

Re: Phil Sims confronts Desmond Howard about son at UT

chris simms was overrated at texas...and if memory serves me, it seemed like major applewhite was basically robbed of more playing time because simms kept getting propped up by his pedigree, but that every time he flopped, applewhite outplayed him. and simms was a total bust with the bucs...getting beaten out by guys like bruce gradkowski...i was never impressed with chris simms, either in college or the pros. plus, gruden basically made it known that chris wanted to play without working hard and that he appeared to expect everything to be handed to him because of who he was.

Some more information:

SPORTSbyBROOKS » Witness: Instigator Simms Called Howard ‘Fraud’

From the article:

t was then that Simms, who was behind a rope and being accompanied by a sponsor-assigned security officer as he was leaving the exhibit, spotted Howard and attempted to get his attention. As a sponsor rep alerted Howard, Simms blurted out loudly in Howard’s direction:
“Hey Desmond, I saw the tape. You called my son (Tennessee football player Matt Simms) the worst quarterback in the country.”
Howard then slowly got up from his promo appearance and approached Simms. Once he reached Simms, Howard said,
“I never called your son the worst quarterback in the country, I said that in the Tennessee-LSU game you will see three of the worst quarterbacks in the SEC.”
Simms replied, “That’s bull—-, you don’t say that about anyone else.”
Howard: “I just said it about two other guys (in the same sentence) and statistically, they were.”
Simms: “Well, you didn’t say statistically.”
Howard: “You’re in the business, I’ve got 20 seconds to make my point and I think people got what I was talking about.”

Being a Dad is one thing. Being a jerk is something else.
This is true!!! Seems like I remember a great coach slamming us when his son got fired.........Hey, they're just protecting their kids, but like you said, don't be a jerk about it

I never thought Phil Sims was a world beater either. Pretty good but not great. Did kind of remind me of Craig James being whiney.

Phil Sims' reputation hinges a lot on a 22 for 25/2 TD performance in Super Bowl XXI. Up until recently, his 88% completion record in the post-season was a NFL record.

Here are his career stats in retrospect:
33,462 YDs, 199 TDs, 157 INTs, 78.5 QB rating

I don't think that will be a problem any longer. Unless Matt transfers to DivII and ESPN demotes Howard to calling those games.

I've got to hand it to Desmond, he's got a lot more respect from me after that remark. He gets it. Simms doesn't.

My god his career stats are decent but dang sure nothing that screams "GREAT QUARTERBACK"!!! I thought he had better numbers then that but I must have been just remembering for his SB performance.

That's what happens with a lot of people. You play lights out and win a Super Bowl for New York... people tend to remember that more than the rest.

Just look at Joe Namath's career stats:

27,633 YDs, 173 TDs, 220 INTs, 65.5 QB rating. Yet, Super Bowl III negates all of that.

yeah, stats aside, you couldn't have a pro football hof and not have namath simply because of the monumental historical importance of sbIII. and crazy as it sounds, the guarantee is almost as important. namath broke a lot of barriers, regardless of his stats and whether people agreed or disagreed with him.

Sounds like one of those parents that would start a fight with a HC or a Ref during a game if things don't go his son's way..And for the record..Desmond is spot about Matt..

Agreed. The credibility of the AFL/NFL merger hinged on an AFL team being competitive against an NFL team. When the Jets took down one of the stalwarts of the NFL, the Colts, it was huge.

I'm picking Dez SavannahDare. I think he could take him easily.

I love it when old guys think they can take on younger, obviously-in-better-shape Heisman trophy winners. I wish he had taken a swing at him. How you reckon that would've turned out?:biggrin2:

Re: Phil Sims confronts Desmond Howard about son at UT

And as could be expected Phil Sims has apologized. (Click Here to Listen)

In an interview with Chris Russo on Sirius XM Radio, Simms said that he was “sorry” that the altercation ever took place.

“It’s over,” Simms said. “And, you know, and I’m sorry. I really, I mean this, I’m sorry it happened. I really am because even if it remained private, there’s still nothing gained. So I’ve learned another lesson.”

With steam still apparently hissing its way from the inner workings of his head, Simms did admit that he was “annoyed” with Howard’s immediate tweet of the incident, but said he understood the power of word-of-mouth media.
