Phil Steele was on the Rivals radio show on Sirius this morning and as I was expecting, a Bama fan called in to ask about this years team. Basically, he went through the facts he has in his mag about having great WR's, a good OL, and a seasoned QB in JPW. He said the D may be a little shakey at first with only 5 or 6 returning starters but he then pointed out that our 2005 D which was one of the best in the nation had about that many return.

He then compared this years team to last years Arkansas team. He said Arkansas came off a bad previous season in '05 but they clearly outgained all the opponets in yardage. Same way for Bama and Bama played all the big games very close. He said he really liked Bama's chances this season to win the West because of our favorable schedule and then the Saban hire just confirmed it. He even mentioned us as a darkhorse NC contender.

I just about fell out of my chair when I heard him make that statement. I wonder just how dark that horse is in Phil's mind?

And I don't care where we play them, but it's hard to say "favorable" about any schedule including Arkansas, Auburn, FSU, GA, LSU and Tenn!

It was certainly fun to listen to. I just hope he's right, even if it's just the beating Auburn and possibly winning the West part. I believe we'd all sign off on that as a heck of a 1st season in the Coach Nick Saban era. :biggrin2:

Roll Tide!!!

Phil I think there is a crack in your crystal ball but I like your optimism.

Yah, I'd rewrite that Bama has a great chance to finish 2nd in the West...and that a NC is a little too far out in left field. If it does happen, the word "improbable" will forever be attached to this year's team.

Now that's one dark horse DayHiker! :eek2:

That's about how dark I was thinking.

But like Alan said,, it is nice to hear "a little luv". I'd much rather hear dark horse national champion contender than predictions of 5-6 losses.

Unless my memory is failing me I remember returning 10 starters on defense in2005. The only starter we lost off a great 2004 defense was Todd Bates.

Guys, Steele made the same comments about us on the Finkbomb show last week. I'm not sure I completely concur with his predictions however, the guy does his homework.

it's nice change of pace to hear those things along with Trev Albert picking us to win some crucial games. Just as long as Corso does not get on the bandwagon

He made the comment that he was on Finebaum when he made the prediction about Arkansas and Paul rolled his eyes at him. He then mentioned that Arkansas went on to win the West last season. The dude does do his homework and although I think he may be stretching our success a little as well, I don't think he is that far off if our Defense can click.

BTW, Rivals is on Channel 123 on Sirius from 6:00-9:00 AM CST.

1992 in October I made a 11 year trip overseas. Unfortunately, I only got to watch Alabama play 3 games that year. Now it is 2007, and I leave Sunday overseas again to defend our country. Maybe just maybe Alabama can do what they did for me the last time I went. It sure does make it easier when you have something to keep your mind off of being away from home. Alabama football is that to me. Roll Tide and maybe me being away is the good luck charm. Thank God they got more sports channels on the Armed Forces Network, and maybe can see more than just 3 games. Roll Tide!
