Steele seems to base a lot of his opinion on the fact that we consistently outgained other teams last year, but still found a way to lose.

I hope his logic is sound, but wonder: Did we outgain the other teams because of an O that had talent, only to lose because we couldn't score because of poor coaching at the goal line?

Or did Joe Kines' D hold the bad guys down, so we were fortunate to be as close as we were, and the offensive advantage was an illusion generated by a good D, not a good O?

Time will tell. Still say that the Arkansas game will be the most telling of the season.

Whoa! Wait just a minute. I thought this was Tidefans.com. The web-site of perpetual national championship hopes. Regardless of the team, the season, the schedule or the coach we are always national championship contenders.

Somebody mentions us in the same sentence an NC and we question his sanity. Must have been directed to the wrong site!

Phil Steele's track record as a prognosticator is second to none. Remember, he said "contender", which means he thinks it won't be long before Alabama will be playing for the title, not just contending. JMHO

we are always national championship contenders
I think it's partly that we're a fan base that's been kicked around the last several years. The rest of it is that the HC is telling us that it's too soon to be talking championships, that we need to focus on the process instead. And we're split right down the middle between those who think he means what he's saying and others who think that he's just poor-mouthing. I'd say we're a very confused fan base at the moment...

Good point HSV. There are a few things that come into question here. We played every team close to the vest last year (including the mighty gaytors)before shooting ourselves in the foot. Knowing this, I personaly dont buy the "lack of talent" theory. We have a great coach now, who will put us in more favorable gametime situations. That alone should equal some more wins. The biggest setback I see is the learning of the O & D. Which is why most see us starting slow & finishing strong. I personally think by late Oct. we will hit our stride. (preferrably the 3rd. week)

how is it we've forgotten that almost without exception a new coaching regime's first year is not a big year due to the process of installing a new philosophy?

I heard Stabler and company commenting on this on the radio. I believe it was Chris Stewart who said that Bama was a dark horse National Championship contender like he was a dark horse for winning the Mr. Universe contest.

Seiriously, though, all he said was a dark horse contender. And all that means is he thinks we have a good shot at winning the West (he did pick us second), and a dark horse at winning the SEC. Win the SEC, and you're in the hunt, or at least the talk, for a National Championship.

Leigh is a "she" and the admin of an OK sports board. I've said it until I'm blue in the face, but I think it's a mistake to count last year's wins as automatic and then add on from there. Our record last year could have easily been worse. If we're a "dark horse," then I know our name - "Black Beauty." :D

good point ga bamafan. after reading all these replies you would think this is in aubie board. do we not have confidence in our guys anymore? 10 back on "O" and a young but talented defense that will learn on the go. No matter what year it is or how many guys were returning or the coach, never underestimate anyone in the sec, especially not your own team. as for the national title dark horse thing, yea we are. until we lose, then the light is gone. Arky game will be the biggest game up until the lsu game imho. if we get by arky and UT then were in for a good season. UT has the same type of team we do this year. As does arky. As for the sec west , i wouldnt doubt it if we won the west or come in 2nd behind lsu.If you pick up the phil steele magazine and look at the stats game by game and look at the rest of the league, and what they have returning then the race is wide open. all we need is a few breaks. have faith in the players! all i'm asking!

Exactly, friend.

Contend for the SEC and you are in the mix nationally for big things.

I have read Phil Steele's preview religiously since I bought my first a few years ago. Its second to none in volume of info. He sticks by his predictions and isn't biased even though he is from Big10 country. The thing I am having a problem with about his prediction this time is the complete turnover of most things football related. I believe we can have a special offense this time but you have to remember the 2003 defense was coached by the same man who coached the 2004 and 2005 defenses. It just took the players some time to learn the system. The same thing is happening this season and this D is a complete opposite of what they are used to running. CNS was able to go through the spring with the players and maybe that will make a difference but I'm just not sure how much. Even then, its hard for me to break down games on an individual basis and predict more than one regular season loss for the Tide. :D Earle, what were you saying about being confused???

Having some personal knowledge of Phil Steele and his background I find him and his prognostications most interesting…as do the “boys” in "Lost Wages". Not just some run of the mill wannabe sports hack, he is one of the guys they pay big bucks to help build odds. You see his magazine in many of the sports gaming parlors there…the real ones off strip. The consummate mix of mathematician/computer geek/sports junkie Phil does his homework to be sure. Though his national rankings are about as laughable as the rest as we 20-20 QB them at them at season end his position/strength rankings/stats are excellent. And although my Crimson Glasses tend to stay a little fogged I think he is right on with UA growth potential…and opportunity to get back on track. ROOOOOL TIDE!!!!
