I've read some reports that he has a quick release, extremely intelligent, and runs an offense very well. Would it be a stretch to compare him to Greg?

There are widely divergent opinions about Philip on the board and you can search and find them. CNS compared him to Greg and I would as well. But I apparently only watched the games where Philip was off on his accuracy. When I saw Greg play in HS, he was much more accurate. But the team he played for in FL (Plant) did well and he was a key player. Appears smart. Decent but not great arm. Game manager type. Let's just say I'll be optimistic and hope he develops in to a player like Greg. Greg came came from a similar type school so they saw a similar level of competition. Greg came in with a mindset though to work and get better. If Philip does not have the same mindset, I do not see him playing that much.

To me he's one of those guys that will come in and develop as a 3-4 year backup. If he develops well enough, he'd start by his Sr. season. I don't think we picked him up to be a star QB, we picked him up to develop depth. That's not a knock on him at all, not every QB has an NFL future, obviously.

Having watched Phillip play at Plant over the last 2 years, I would say he is like a Greg Mc carbon copy in many ways. However, his release is better at this age and his touch is unreal. If Plant's WR corps had been as good this season as they have been in the recent past, Plant would have won state easily instead of falling short in the final game.

I think it is agreed on by most people that his skills are not close in comparison with AJ or Phillip. However, QB is one of those positions that requires more mental preparation than most positions. Therefore, who knows what kind of QB he can develop into 3 years from now. Like Saban always says, it doesn't matter how most of these kids are able to contribute next year. The real determinant is how they can perform in 3 years. I think Phillip Ely can be a great QB and lead us to another NC. There's a good chance he will be wearing #12. And we all know how that # can inspire greatness. :)

I believe it not a far off comparison. He doesn't have an amazing skill set just like Gmac but in the offense we run you don't need the huge skill sets like a Bradford had. I think we're going to have some QBs coming to the team in 2012 with some pretty good skill sets though that could seperate themselves from PE by the time the QB starting spot is open. Gmac was just in the right spot at the right time and succeed.

Nope, I hear he is a great manager of the game. CNS saw something he liked and this might have been what is was....:)
I agree 100%, if CNS had not seen something about this kid he liked, he never would have offered him just to get another QB, JMO!

I dont think the coaches would have offered him unless they thought he had what it takes.

A lot of great players didnt develop until the had a couple seasons of coaching, then they became great.

give him a chance before you decide his future off his past...whihc has been pretty impressive IMO

If the kid is known for his accuracy and quick release he's already got two huge pluses going for him already. Big arms and being 6'4 doesn't guarantee success at the qb position. If this kid can come in, get in the weight room, develop both mentally and physically we have no idea what this kid could ultimately do. There are a lot of "system qbs" that have lit it up in th college ranks. Look at the Kellen Moore kid at Boise St. His accuracy, familiarity of the system, quick release and his grasp of the mental aspect of the game allows him to have very good success even though his physical make-up would say otherwise. Like some have mentioned. If Saban gave him a scholly it dang sure wasn't because he felt sorry for him.

Is he really 6'4? He just seems shorter than that the times I saw him play on TV.
He wasn't saying Ely is 6'4", he was saying that just because a QB (generally speaking) has all the perfect measurements, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll turn into a great QB.

Thank you sir. I heard both Dan Marino and Troy Aikman say during the 2010 NFL season (and I've also heard Bill Walsh and Joe Montana say this as well) that accuracy is one of, if not the, most important determing factors regarding the success or lack there of a qb. That a qb can "get by" with not having a big arm, the "right height" and other physical measurements but accuracy is one of those that if a qb doesn't have he's finished before he ever starts.

True, but the success rates for QB's that are 6'2" or taller is astonishing compared to shorter QB's. There were exactly 2 starting QB's in the NFL this year who were under 6'2". I'm not saying you have to be tall to play QB, but the success rate speaks for itself.

And who's to say the kid won't grow another inch or so? Most boys/men don't stop growing until they're in their early 20's. He's 6'1 now and is what, 17-18 years old? I'd be willing to bet he grows at least an inch between now and when he graduates. But even if he doesn't he still has a chance to be an excellent COLLEGE qb. I think its too early to go ahead and pigeon hole him as a 3-4 year "backup" at this stage.

I would venture to say that accuracy at the college level can overcome more than it can on the NFL level due to the talent differential from team to team and player to player. In the NFL the talent level is so close that the room for era or deficiencies is narrow. But with the larger gap in talent from team to team/player to player that we see on the college level, I think a shorter qb at 6'1 can still be very good.
