Pick The Score: Alabama vs Michigan

SELMA'S STATS MODEL:
Michigan 31
Alabama 27

Selma's Hunch:
Alabama 28
Michigan 20

(Note: the stats model I was using has been substantially weakened by the bowl opt outs; I'm VERY hesitant to include, for example, Mizzou over Ohio State in consideration. However - key point here - if LSU and Tennessee beat the Big Ten foes tomorrow UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES - it would flip the score to Alabama winning by the same number as above, 31-27).

The problem is calculating the difference between the conferences. PERSONALLY - not with numbers but personally - I think the Big 10 is more paper tiger than anything else thing year. Yet again they have the four best defenses in the country and yet again, Depleted Ole Miss is plowing Penn State, whose yardage allowed was being compared just days ago to 2011 Alabama. Even allowing for opt outs, Ole Miss had them, too - and Alabama held that Ole Miss powerhouse to 10 points. Thus, my model has always had a built-in handicap that I can't really use anymore, though it's been effective.

(The only absolute implosion on my model was 2018 Clemson over Alabama, and that one spit out a tie, and I opted to see it favoring Alabama because of the SoS; how was I to know Tua would start the game with a Pick Six? It is based on AVERAGE performance; if a team plays its best game of the year, it won't work).

So let me fudge it like this: allow one point for every 7 rankings on the SoS and let's see if this works.

That gives us 7 points to distribute weighted in Alabama's favor and basically gives us the 31-27 Alabama win.

I'll adjust as necessary after this game and the UW-Texas one.

Note on the model - when I"ve attempted to use it before, I've gotten the following. As you can see, it isn't perfect, but it's pretty damned good.

Super Bowl 48 - Seattle routing Denver (honestly, I deleted the data, not sure of the numbers
Super Bowl 49 - Seattle 28 New England 24
Super Bowl 50 - Carolina 28 Denver 23
Super Bowl 51 - New England 31 Atlanta 27
Super Bowl 52 - Eagles in a romp over Patriots (note: the numbers I got weren't close to the final score)
Super Bowl 54 - Kansas City 28 49ers 24

2013 BCS Title Game: Alabama 28 Notre Dame 7
2014 Sugar Bowl: Alabama Ohio State pick 'em (34-34)
2015 Cotton Bowl: Alabama 31 Michigan State 10 (I fudged it to 17 because I couldn't believe it)
2016 Title Game: Alabama 27 Clemson 17 (got the score wrong but we were up by 12 with seconds left)
2016 Peach Bowl: Alabama 30 Washington 16
2017 CFPNCG: Alabama 31 Clemson 17
2018 SECCG: Alabama 38 Georgia 24 (note: model showed 38-28)
2018 Playoff: Clemson 35 Notre Dame 20
2018 Playoff: Alabama 54 Oklahoma 35
2019 NCG: Alabama 30 Clemson 28 (rated a toss-up, I went with SoS and.....)
2019 Rose Bowl: Washington vs Ohio St (rated a toss-up, I chose Washington, 28-24 and Ohio St won, 28-23)

I haven't used it since the Covid pandemic because I've been too busy otherwise.

I see this game going 14-10 Bama at the half with both teams feeling each other out and eating up a lot of clock.

We adjust and Michigan turns the ball over and scores late , but it's a 31-17 Tide victory with Milroe throwing strikes in the second half.

17-3 at half time. Saban and company adjust during the half and kick things in overdrive taking out their will. Final score 36-20 the good guys.

If UM sticks with what they have been doing the last half of the season, 31-17, good guys win. If they do an offensive over haul that focuses on qb runs and stretching the field in the running game, then who knows? I will say 28-24, us. The good news is that I do not think they have the personnel to run a significantly different offensive scheme.

Hey Bama in Va, I grew up in the country. There were two kinds of chickens. “Layers” or “egg chickens” were hens you raised to harvest eggs from and/or expand your flock. “Meat chickens“ or “meat birds“ were headed for KFC, etc. They pretty much lived short lives in fairly nasty conditions doing nothing but getting fat. Fairly disgusting on the whole. That may or may not be the origin, but I find it apt.
