His family going public hurts Asa because it hurts his program. That is, unless he plans to transfer and they wanted to get in licks.

I read this and think two things: If I were an Auburn commit, I would think about this kind of poor roster management. If I were a coach considering ASA as a transfer, I am going to have to deal with his parents.

It is a gamble. In a way, I probably would've done the same after realizing they messed up my son redshirting and this was something that should've been caught by the coaching staff. This look bad for the coaching staff more than it looks bad for Martin.

Any school will take Martin if he decide to transfer, but he has nothing to gain by transferring right now.

Once you burn the redshirt, you play him. They didn't. That's why I would be mad.

While the story is old, looks like al.com has an article about it because his parents were willing to talk.

I'm no expert on athletic scholarships, but in 5 years a young man could get a masters degree if he were so inclined..... That might be important if you didn't think the NFL were in your future, or if money were an issue for the family, or others factors. Maybe there's a provision in athletic scholarships that allow you to pursue any degree program you begin at no cost...somehow I doubt it though.

Agreed, but schools can and do bring back players to finish graduate programs at no cost to the player all the time - after their playing days are over. You can't promise it as that would be a recruiting violation, but it happens all over the country every year.

I am a firm believer that parents need to stay out of their child's business regarding academics and athletics at the HS and college level unless they see a big problem (especially with academics). There is really no good explanation for this blunder but if it happened to my kid, I would want some answers from the coaches. I wouldn't take it to the media as I wouldn't want to expose my kid to the negativity and petty nonsense that can come from that. This kid was done wrong by Auburn but is there not an obligation to all parties (player, coach, parents) to be a check and balance system? Did Asa just assume AU was going to burn the redshirt and play him all year? When I got to game 4, I would have asked the coaches what their plan was instead of waiting it out. I mean, don't players have the right to ask what the goal/plan is? Shouldn't they be held accountable, too?

That's good, I'd say he was owed that, at least. I wonder if Auburn could petition the NCAA in light of their obvious screw up?

i would never hope or wish Arbrun did anything right however, their move needs to be stop hiring these lame duck coaches and wait until a candidate emerges that you want. It's like how parents always tell their kids. Dont quit your job until you have another lined up. They keep firing coaches instead of waiting on someone legit.

I believe the motivation for doing that is an improved APR Score for the program...
