Play Call on INT return

I don't know if this has been brought up, but when I sit back and contemplate the INT, the return for a TD, and that sequence that basically lost the game for Bama yesterday, I have to say that this was not all JPW's fault. Think about it - Bama had just used it's last time out, it is 3rd and goal with no time left for an unsuccessful run. Applewhite put JPW in a no-win situation. He was under center, and the play call was a play-action pass. First of all, did CMA think that MSU was going to bite on a fake run? Everyone in the stadium knew we had to pass. When JPW cam out of the fake and had to waggle back to the right side, he was already face-to-face with the MSU defender. Now, the pass was ill-advised and very dumb. Saying that, wouldn't the most prudent thing to do would be to put JPW in the gun, flood a zone, and if nothing is there, throw it away? At least then if you don't get the TD, a chip-shot FG would put Bama up by 9 -- 2 scores that MSU had not shown any offensive ability to get.

I would have loved to see us do them like we did UT and spread'em out with the shot gun formation and either run a draw or qb sneak. I know. If we would have got sacked time would have ran out. But we wouldn't have given up seven.

I cant defend JPW anymore. He made the mistake. It cost us the game. However, that doesnt make any other QB behind him better. Perhaps Shula wasnt as stubborn as we thought about keeping certain players on the field. We are stuck with JPW for better or worse.

Of course, hindsight is ALWAYS 20-20, but it does seem like the purdent thing to have done would be throw it away. However, JPW may have seen something that he thought he could make happen.

The problem with the interception was the two play calls and lack of execution before the interception. If we punch it in on first or second down, there is no interception.

CNS said the exact same thing in his press conference after the game.

I must say I didn't understand how the TO's were used because we didn't leave one for 3rd down. But JP still made a throw he should have never tried to make. That has been the Achilles heel of JP all season long, he panics and tries to make plays out of nothing.

Maybe it's just me, but it definitely looked like that the last lineman (wanna say it's Capps but I don't know) simply missed the block of the guy JPW avoided. I would've expected a different call, but to me, it definitely looked like the lineman completely missed the block.

when you are that close you should be able to run it in......after not being able to punch it in.....what other play are you going to run besides a pass play.....no push up front

Really, the entire sequence was a disaster from both a playcalling and an execution standpoint. First and second down felt like a return to the "Jumbo Package" (shudder), except without McClain or Castille. I was looking for some sort of deception on one of those plays, but.... :conf2:

The third down call didn't fool anyone, and the formation put JPW in a terrible position. I'm not gonna defend what JPW did, but major pressure by Brown couldn't have been a total surprise to the staff. With the benefit of hindsight, lining up in the shotgun might have won the game.

we haved beaten this subject into the ground, its sunday, we are not coaches, let it go!
The play calling on the goalline was very predictable, thus terrible with smallish backs running a power game, the play action with a few seconds left and no timeouts didn't fool anyone. titus brown was OLE blocked all day long, so to call a play toward his side on the goalline was terrible. however, CMA, nor CNS threw the ball.... enough said!

Myself and others on this board stated before the season that we would be 7-5 or 8-4 when all was said and done. Our reasoning for this was simply that as a team we did not posses the strength and stamina it takes to win alot of games in the SEC at this time. That has been made evident by the way our line still cannot push people back a yard or two when needed towards the end of a game. When we get more strength and depth and tallent we will be able to do that. Untill then we will struggle.

The biggest problem is that we as a fan base have no patience at all. We all feel like we would have made a much better coach than CNS. We are so good at recliner coaching that we would have made all the right calls and win the NC this year.

Maybe JPW tried a little too hard to make a play and it backfired. At least he tried.

JPW stated that he was trying to throw the ball in the stands. Just didn`t get enough on it. Probably due to the big defensive end in the process of planting him in the turf.

To the right of the Center there were two players on the line and wing at the end (Huber?) The right guard (1) slanted to the left and blocked a left side lineman. To his right (2)(McCall?) went out for the right side bootleg pass but the wing player (3) who I thought should have picked up the charging defensive end, after missing the snap count by at least a second, veered inside towards the left side end zone neither blocking anyone or being a viable receiver on the play. I bet he was supposed to block someone otherwise no one was assigned to block anyone on the right side of the line.

I agree. It definately looked like a blown blocking assignment and an all out jailbreak by the defense.

The whole problem started after JPW did a QB sneak for a 1st down and with 38 seconds remaining and we called time out. I didn't understand why we called time out. The clock stopped and we could have ran into the line and there would have still be at least 25 seconds left for 2 more plays. Then on 2nd or 3rd you still have time outs and they have to respect the run. Also JPW should have been told on the last TO that if you are going to get sacked just do intentional grounding as we are so close it would not effect a FG. JPW was not totally at fault as no one was thinking run but if he was as smart as we would like, he would have just grounded to ball and taken the penalty and the FG.

The playcall on third down was terrible and Major Applewhite playcalling and sequence of playcalling the season as a whole leaves somethin to be desired.

If the play call was bad; why NOT audible? Isn't that what QB's do? Or is the bigger problem the staff won't let JPW audible? Not sure of the answer but the sequence at the end of the half was in a word an embarassement!
Lot of blame to go around but ultimately the blame is on the QB... he is supposed to be the leader.... whether the O Line is banged up or not... JPW Is a Junior; throw the ball 10 rows up.
