That's what I was thinking.

I would say both have had very successful offenses. Especially Meyer. fRAN's offenses here at BAMA averaged over 400 yds per game both years. So you don't have to have an offensive coordinator to call the plays - the head coach could call them and be successful.

Thanks for the reply.

I guess...

the only quibble that could be made would be whether it would be wise for a rookie HC, still learning the ropes of administration, etc. OTOH, I'm sure that fRan, and SOS, for that matter always called their own plays...

That's true. And Coach Shula would probably be the first to say he's learning more and more each day.

I'm willing to be patient, though. I feel like patience will pay huge dividends for BAMA fans with Coach Shula.

Be cautioned, though, I have been accused of being a "sunshine pumper" in the past.

The best thing...

for UA, long term, will be for the "sunshine pumpers" to turn out to be right. I think even the pessimists would agree...

There's no doubt about that. And let me say, I don't pretend to know without a doubt that Coach Shula will win championships. But, no one knows without a doubt that he won't.

So, I choose to be positive about it. When you're presented with the 2 options - being optimistic or being negative - why not be positive?

Roll Tide.

Use this diagram to create a BETTER sunshine pump... Roll Tide. So far I have no complaints with Shula or his efforts. Unlike Dubose, he is maintaining a strong program both on and off the field.

Did fRAN call his own plays?

What about Urban Meyer, does anyone know if he calls his own plays?

Just wondering...
Urban Meyer does not call his offensive plays. The new UNLV Head Coach Mike Sanford was the offensive coordinator and he said on TV here when he accepted the UNLV Coaching job that it was his offense and he called the plays. He has promised to bring that same style of offense to UNLV.

Sanford Takes Over At UNLV: Top offensive coordinator now becomes ninth head coach in Rebel history

Why does it seem to be such a big.......

......issue who calls the plays? Shula or Rader? I do know that Shula calls them. Unlike some people on here. This issue seems to keep coming up for the last couple of months? WHY? Head coaches does this all over the country and in the NFL. Some have OC's who call plays. I've watched a lot of football in my life and I see no advantage or disadvantage either way. Am I missing something here? If so what? Why do some people seem not to agree with a head coach calling his own plays? I know this thread is not going to help but i would like to, for once and for all, make this a dead issue.

for the clarification, Steve...
No problem Earle. I have followed Utah and Mike Sanford out here pretty closely. When he did his interview he wasn't shy about saying that the Utah offense was his and he called the plays. If you look at the Utah record the two years he was there it speaks volumes for who's offense it was.

I breathed a big sigh of relief when Mike Sanford took the head coaching job at UNLV and didn't go to Florida with Meyer. Especially since Bama plays the Gators next year. lol

ABSOLUTELY!!!
You are right about one thing for sure. It is an ABSOLUTELY!!! positive thing for Bama that Mike Sanford is going to UNLV and not to Florida with Coach Meyer. ;) I like you optimistic outlook.

I'd like to know this too. The only thing I can think of that would be a disadvantage to a head coach calling the plays is that maybe it would keep him from concentrating on everything else that is happening on the field, but I'm just guessing here. I really have no problem with Coach Shula calling the plays. Sometimes I wish he would stop running Kenneth Darby up the middle time after time when it isn't working, but for the most part I think he does a good job.

For what its worth...

Bowden once said that "Most college coaches are about even when it comes to X's and O's. The key is having the athletes to execute the plays."

I know not many like BB, but he does have a point when it comes to "coaching". I know there is more to coaching than X's and O's, but it seems that this is what this thread is about.

Sometimes, the object of calling a play (or a series of plays) is not designed to do anything more than set up the defense for a play-action pass. If Darby breaks free and scampers out for 10 or 15 yards, all the better. But even if he doesn't, having the defense see the same play called out of the same set for about the 12th time makes them think that the same thing is coming on the 13th, when the actual play called on the 13th attempt is a pass play to DJ or Keith, who just happen to be running a post route against man coverage.

One of those went for 40 yards against the barn.
