I've been looking at our roster and some guys we have coming in. Who do you think some of the Big Play home run guys are going to be???
I'm looking at Marquis Maze, Terry Grant, and I"m kinda thinking Lowe as well.
What do you guys think?? Also do you think Brandon Gibson will see playing time this year?

very true you are right, I guess what I mean was like prothro and palmer type guys, turn a three yard screen play into a 60 yard touchdown type.

We have the obvious guys like DJ Hall who are like the big time down field threats but I see him less likely to make something out of nothing on runs and such, just mainly because of his size, the smaller guys usually do that.

Not actually a breakthrough year considering he showed sparks of greatness last year; but I hope to see Javier Arenas break some Prothro like plays this year, and if Stover can get open consistently, I think he'll shine.

Why do some people have this vision in their head that playmakers can only be 5'7-5'9, 165lb-180lb guys with speed? If Keith Brown can stay healthy this year, why couldn't he be a playmaker? DJ seems to be more of the possesion type receiver and KB the playmaker. I do agree with Terry Grant though.

Yes if he catches the ball going down field he can out run everybody, but he is not going to go through traffic and cut and shake off eight people. The reason I have this vision of 5'8 185 guys doing that is because they usually are the ones that do it. I'm not saying they are any more important than downfield speed guys like DJ and Keith but they are a different type of receiver and I'm curious as to who people think will step up and be those guys.

unless maze increases his max lifts by about 100-150 pounds this offseason, he won't see the field. according to jack eyer (the popular trainer), maze weighed in around 158 the last time he saw him and he needs significant weight room work to even be able to contribute. after a redshirt year, he should be a BEAST.

i dont care who it is or how big he is all i want is a guy who the defense is always asking "where is (insert whoever here)?" Because if you have a guy like that it allows other players to get single coverage and break away...

Remember the Florida game from 2005? He took that quick slant and turned it into a long TD. I'd say he more than qualifies for the definition of a "playmaker." To me a playmaker is a playmaker no matter how they get it done. Size doesn't matter in my book in regards to this either.

We did not have a real playmaker last year. I see some things in Grant that give me hope, but most of the guys on our current roster don't seem to have that type of "insert appropriate noun" (see Prothro/Palmer)...

Same here if he can catch the ball which being as he returns kicks and punts i'm sure he could to some extent put that guy in the slot and let him work. Taking two kicks to the house gets you a little offensive work in my book. Back to the KB playmaker thing. He is not the type of player that you say hey lets just get him the ball and let him do the work and break some tackles. You throw him the ball point and say out run the guy. I don't think he is the same TYPE of player that palmer and prothro are. They CREATE things when it seemingly is not there kinda like javier when he ran straight into the croud and amazingly came out of it. That is what i'm talking about when I say playmaker.

I'm sure the coaches are considering all abilities, but it'd seem that his hands would be proven from fielding kicks. I'd appear that the slot would be his position, but I guess they believe he's more valuable on defense...

There are exceptions to everything. Ok how about this
1993 National Championship playmaker???? David Palmer
1999 Sec Championship playmaker?? Freddie Millons, obviously SA too
2005 10 win season, Playmaker?? Tyrone Prothro, made everybody better, look at our offense when he left.
These are the type of players I'm talking about.

1999 was SA's year. He had a nose for the endzone like no other Bama player in my lifetime.

Very true he had a great year. However the guy you line up at quarterback and runs back and forth across the field and takes it 73 yards to the house in the SEC championship game is a play maker. Ran for touchdowns, threw for touchdowns, caught touchdowns, and scored on special teams. No doubt SA was a better player though I do agree with you on that.

As long as we have guys making plays I don't care how they do it, or what type of mold they fit into ya know what I mean? :biggrin2:
And I think we have more than a couple who can fit the bill.
