Why owuld any team want to play a divsion I-AA team? Georgia Sothern made UGA look bad for awhile. I watched this game and Southern was robbed several times early in the game. Southern still managed to put up 28 points and controled the clock easily against the number 3 team. Divsion I-AA teams have beaten mediocre Division I-A teams periodically. some divsion I-A teams have even had to go to OT to beat the "smaller schools". Western Carolina is the scariest team on Bama's schedule this year. at team like this could easily be over looked and could sneak up a give us fits. afterall they did put up 77 points last week (granted it was against a lower divsion team than them but 77 points is still 77 points). I can understand why a lower divsion team would schedule us but why on earth would we want to play them. it is a no win situation; if you blow them out you are a bully and if it is close you are a chump and a laughing stock. aslo i thought that divsion I-AA games did not count toward wins to get to a bowl game? anyone who could possibly shed some light on these questions please do so.

We were originally scheduled to play Penn St. However, because of the NCAA sanctions alot of revenue had been lost. The athletic department decided to post-pone/cancel the Penn St series and schedule an additional home game to help make up some of the lost revenue. A 1-AA team is not ideal but was probably just about all that was available.

Basically, this is an aberration. Just be happy that Alabama does not make playing 1-AA teams a regular habit.

Me? I'm happy because I now don't have to make the choice between my nephew's birthday party and a Bama/Penn St game. :)

Actually the Utah State series(this year and next) is the game that replaced the Penn State game. As for Western Carolina, I guess Mal just wanted to take advantage of the one Division 1-AA game we can count.

Ahhh...my mistake then. I thought it was W. Carolina.

I would not to much stock into the Georgia/Georgia Southern game. First of all G.S. runs the triple option and if you are not a option team it is nearly impossible to simulate this in practice. Also G.S. is a prominent program in 1-AA. As for scheduling W. Carolina I agree with the previous posts that it was done simply to have a home game for the revenue. Unless half of our team falls asleep at the hotel and misses the bus ride to the stadium we should win this one easily. W. Carolina is no Georgia Southern...RTR

The cost to Alabama is about $200K to get them to come to >

BD. However, we make $2,520,000 on ticket alone for a home game...not including consessions and other revenue like TV PPV and such. That's why we play them!

Also, a win is a win is a win and 6 gets you to a bowl, which generates much more $$$!

I don't understand either why a IA team would want to plany a IAA either. There plenty of IA teams every year that are bad enough to be called a cupcake on anyone's schedule. As for Western Carolina, I think that they scored 77 points on a DII school. I wouldn't read too much into that: Fran scored 73 on Baylor last year and look how pathetic A&M was in 2003.

They didn't score 77 points on just a DII school. They scored 77 points on a former NAIA school that is starting their first year of DII football.

who cares?

this is the first time in many years bama has had one on the schedule and frankly i think we need it. we are a young and thin team. to play anyone with some sort of stature could really hurt us whether we win or not. sure playing OU was a fun game to watch, but the fact is that we lost. who cares if you have the toughest schedule in the nation when you go 4-9? i dont. ill take 8-3 with a 1AA win anyday. plus, this game counts as a win for us. TAKE ADVANTAGE of rules in your favor.

Schedules are hard to work out. Its too important to have at least 7 home games for the income if you have a big stadium. If you can't get a DIV-I team, you take a DIV IA or a DIV II.

Anything but drop to six home games.
