Poem of the Day, 12-7

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

In order to add a little spice to this board, I'm going to start posting daily poems here. For my first installment of this feature, I'll give you a classic from the greatest of the great.

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun (Sonnet 130)

by William Shakespeare

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go;
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

CShine,

Great idea, now you're barking up my tree. I left a couple of website addresses on one of Capstone's threads for others to check out two contemporary poets that I respect a lot.

If you get a chance go to www.poetrymagazine.org and click on the featured poets of the month archive for November. I just had new work posted there. 5 poets will be listed for that month--I am the one whose contributor note states that I received my M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Arizona State. You will also discover that there will be no mention of the University of Alabama in the bio. The reason for that is when I was still "green behind the ears" I was kindly asked to leave the Capstone after my freshman year and to wait until I knew what I wanted to do with my life before coming back.

Who are other poets besides Shakespeare that you read? How about any of the Modern and Post-Modern poets? My areas of poetic interest include Southern contemporary poetry and American contemporary poety since 1945.
