I'm old and therefore old fashioned but I like seeing grass stains and dirt on the unis! A big clump of dirt in the facemask is a good thing!

You can't ever go wrong with the Holy Grail injected into a thread! :biggrin2: One of the all-time great classics...

We’ve got turf on our field at the HS I teach at. Every time I walk on it it feels like I’m stepping on a very firm mattress; feels solid, but has some give. I despise the little pellets that are in there. They get in your shoes and will be with you the rest of the day no matter how many times you take your shoes off and empty them.

I love the natural grass at BDS. I know it is difficult to keep, but every year they scrape off the old and replace it with brand new sod. With the unpredictable weather in October and November you’re going to have problems. Just part of it.

Roll Tide!!

Probably at 35k or in an airport somewhere
Those eggheads ain't ever been tackled and driven into carpet on concrete before ...... I have! It hurts a lot more than than natural grass!
I wouldn’t let reams of data showing no meaningful difference in injury rates get in the way of my opinion either.

Aesthetically, I prefer grass. But it’s just a preference...

My dad is the band director at a school that uses that grass-turf with the rubber pellets. Last year, it was so hot one Saturday that the soles of the band’s shoes were melting during their pregame routine. They had to re-purchase shoes for the entire band.

Here in the hot south, those rubber pellets can cross the 100 degree mark pretty easily. No one should have to play football on top of a stove.

Here's an article that might help shed some light. It's not just about knee injuries and so forth. Yes, the article is from a pro-turfgrass standpoint, but there are many other articles that support this information.

Yeah, they claimed that the Artificial Turf Temp was 86 degrees hotter than Natural Turf... :rolleye2:

I don't doubt that it is hotter, but not THAT much.

That one statement alone makes the whole article a load of natural fertilizer...

I have no doubt that temps can be that high. When the outside temperature is close to 100, the field can be 170-180. It’s pretty easy to take these readings with laser thermometers. You can walk on these fields and feel the heat through your shoes. You can see the shimmer of heat rising from the field. It’s like walking on coals. Natural grass doesn’t have these problems.

Dude, we had nearly 15 days of rain almost non stop. It wasn’t just a little rain either. I don’t care how good draining is that’s a moisture problem that’ll impact any natural field. It stopped racing literally hours before each game after have rained and rained and rained. I hope we always have a grass field. Saban is also old school and a purist so I’m doubting he’d like that fake stuff.

Nah. Sod is pretty dang hard to land on too, but I have always hated turf. It really does get astronomically hot and cooks your feet in the summer. And I always felt I got worse “burns” from landing on it than on grass. And it gets really nasty. And the pellets are incredibly annoying. But mostly I like natural grass better.

Yep. It rained for the majority of November. For Miss State it rained for about 8 days straight right up to Friday. This weekend it rained very heavily Friday evening through Saturday morning. Sometimes the weather wins. The quad was a mud hole too even in the open grassy bit, and it doesn’t have 200ft of structure surrounding it.

Did someone manage to inject Monty Python, the Holy Grail and Chief Black Warrior, in the same animated .gif?

That takes talent. :pDT_Armataz_01_37:

There is still debate over whether the pellets in artificial turf contribute to cancer risk. The consensus is starting to come around that it is an increased risk, depending on where you source your rubber from. If it's recycled from tires, the risk goes up.

You can Google "artificial turf pellets cancer" and get hundreds of stories on it. ESPN did a OTL on it, I believe. Here's CNN's report: https://www.cnn.com/2017/01/27/health/artificial-turf-cancer-study-profile/index.html

Still too much risk for me to get comfortable with.
