Profanity -- AGAIN?

After a long period of compliance, we've had at least three violations of the profanity policy over the past week....that I know of. There could have been others that got by. At least two were by posters of long standing.

Don't post profanity.

Don't link material that contains profanity.

Don't try to skirt the filters with cute rhymes, alternative spellings or transpositions of letters or syllables. Don't link material that does that.

If the material contains words that you wouldn't use when speaking to a Sunday school class of 10-year-olds, don't use it on TideFans.

You and you alone are responsible for what you link. So don't link material that contains profanity, give a warning, and punt to the mods for action.

If you want to make the board aware of material that is interesting, but contains profanity: Give the warning, and general Google prompts. Something along the lines of what I do with Peter Zeihan's material.

Example: "Peter Zeihan has an interesting video take on recent developments in Ukraine. As he's bad to do, there are some non-TF words. If that doesn't bother you, Google Peter Zeihan Ukraine Russia Struggling"

But don't link it to TideFans.

I'm fed up. Apparently, the least bit of understanding has been interpreted as weakness. There's a fix for that.

My Dad always referred to proper use of language (IOW, no cursing) as "The King's English".

Make no mistake about it, the use of vulgarity is a sign of ignorance. If one has that limited knowledge of the English vocabulary, they need more education.

I remember when Richard Pryor became famous...for simply being vulgar. What he was saying wasn't funny, but many found it so because of his blatant use of that language intermixed into his routine. Unfortunately, most comedians picked up on that and it spread...

I don't understand why people have to use profanity to get to their point. Is it a vocabulary issue? Where I grew up in Alabama we just didn't talk like that on a daily basis in conversation.

Probs a convo for the non sports board and I’m not trying to pick a fight but I am a working comic so I kinda can’t let this go- Comedy is subjective as is all art. What floats your boat may not be for others. I understand you may not like what Pryor did but to say he was not talented or not great at what he did is pretty disingenuous. First of all he was famous as a clean comic before he started cursing. Secondly, you may not like ford cars but to say the assembly line didn’t revolutionize the industry would be false. Often imitated but never reproduced he changed the art form in a way that can’t be underestimated. There isn’t a successful comic alive or dead tbh who wouldn’t put him in the top ten. Also there are like 4 successful clean comics. Period. And even then there’s a ceiling to where you can go with that. People liked him bc he was unfiltered unabridged and raw. Without pretense and completely vulnerable. He and a few others were the bridge between vaudeville and modern standup. He was VERY important

Ultimately, whether one feels that profanity is an acceptable form of communication matters not.

The reality is that the owner and funder (emphasis here, this is not an inexpensive operation...) doesn't want profanity, it's not happening. And while we're at it, we - the mods - agree.

We've tried being gentle, but there are those who simply refuse to follow the (arguable mild) requests of the site owner, so we're nuking people who won't comply.

It's both ridiculous and sad, but here we are.

If you cannot control your language you need to grow up and/or find someplace else to post. We won't miss you.

I have never heard a reasonable explanation as to why so many people think they have to use strong profanity in order to make a statement. It is a profound indication of a declining culture and intelligent.

Have you tried listening to his albums though? Boy howdy is it odd and hard to wrap your head around. Then he broke mentally and he would just read court transcripts. Truly one of the saddest stories ever. When he’s on that Allen show and sings “all alone” mannnnn

I grew up in a home where profanity was not allowed, so I don't use any. I'm really disappointed the way I hear kids talk these days. It almost seems like after kids learn how to say mommy and daddy the next step is to learn profanity.

I’ve always told my kids to be smarter than those who can’t talk without profanity. It’s definitely a sign of a poor ability to get a point across if you can’t do it without being foul.
