Sorry guys if that come off as arrogant. I shouldn't have said it like that. I have watched him on ESPN a couple of times, and I wasn't that impressed. He's on the short side too for a QB. He's only around 6 foot. I know it's nice to have a guy that can step in when someone gets hurt, but I just have a feeling he might sit on the bench his whole career.

To be fair to the kid, when his games were on ESPN earlier this year he was playing with an injured ankle...his last half of the season was much more productive than the first half....

I thought that it wasn't that long ago when we talked of JB leaning to us if offered. Rivals has a pretty extensive scouting report on his profile and it looks like he has all the tools to be a great QB. He certainly can make plays with his feet when they breakdown. I also wasn't impressed by the limited play I saw of Ely, but he was hurt. Kellen Moore, Drew Brees, they are only 6'0 tall and are very good QB's. With coaching Ely and/or JB could be very good for us.

I agree. From the highlights I have seen of JB, I really like his style of play. You can tell he prefers to stay in the pocket and throw, but he's got the ability to flush the pocket and run if he has to. That was one of the problems with Starr Jackson. He would run when he didn't need to. I like JB's size too. Rivals list him as 6'5 225.

Wow I don't understand that comment. A lot of the time its the guys like Ely that turn out to be the best QB's. Super markets are littered with cant miss prospects.
+1

Somebody like him enough to offer. Bret Favre wasn't very tall. How about that Drew Brees kid?

How many times have you watched him? I have watched him 4 times this year (in person) and think he is a great addition to the Tide. Coach Saban has a way of spotting things in young players that most laymen miss. Time will tell.....
I agree Ely should be a great addtion to the Tide. I've only seen Ely play once on TV but I have followed him since he committed and I think he will be a good addition to the team. He is more highly touted than Greg McElroy coming oiut of HS and just like McElroy, he is a winner and a good leader.

I apologize guys. I'm sure Ely is a good kid, and I shouldn't have made that comment. And he might end up being a great addition to the team. Now let's please talk more about JB and less about Ely (my fault).

Just my 2 cents, but I doubt we land another QB unless Ely doesn't end up at Bama. If we sign 2 this year then that gives us 4 scholarship QB's for next year and 3 of those are Elite 11 QB's (to my knowledge). I also don't like it because of some of the QB elites for the 2012 class who already have strong interest in Bama. Assuming we land 2 this year and 1 next year, then we'll have 5 scholarship QB's, 4 of which will most likely be Elite 11. While I love to be stacked like that, I just think we'll spend those schollies elsewhere.

I can see where someone might say what Tradition said if they watched him earlier in the year. But you are correct, he was injured earlier in the year and has since been dialing it up and performing well. When you have an injury like that, it is hard to step into your throws. Obviously McElwain saw something special enough to make an offer. Some of the best quarterbacks I have seen are very much in the mold of Ely.

Sometimes the kids or relatives do read these boards so best to keep that in mind. I made a comment one time about Spencer Region's constant waffling and got a message back from a relative. Of course, if there ever was a time to make a somewhat tacky comment about a recruit.......Spencer was fair game. Not that my comment was tacky. But it brought home the point to me to be careful what I say. If I had it to do over again, I would have made the same comment as it wasn't that negative. But I am more conscious when I post a comment knowing that a commit might be reading what I write.

Great post! And this is why the negative posters on TideFans aren't doing the recruiting for Bama and Coach Nick Saban is. Thank God.
