Quality program, or just win baby?

My middle son played HSF a few years ago, for a.....lets say less than flashy Coach. They usually had a winning season, & made the playoffs once in my son's 4 years. Two yards in a cloud of dust is probably the best description. By being close to what was happening during that period, I can vouch for the fact that the HC ran a really clean, & well respected program. I won't go into a lot of detail, but he was big on character, & teaching fundamentals. I'm not saying he was a bad coach, as he had no less than 4 kids at Bama in that period.

The point of this discussion is this: which is more important to you, a quality program, or wins? pick one or the other, & think about what you are sayng.

If the choices are mutually exclusive, I'll take a quality program that turns out good men. I think we can (and do) have both, without the win-at-all-cost attitude that gets you into trouble...

Ran across it in the dictionary the other day, & the duality of it kind of struck me. :) If it offends anyone, I'll remove it.
I didn't find it offensive...just didn't make a lick of sense to me. The only conclusion I came to was you were describing yourself as a demon...and that didn't make sense either.

Duality...the beauty of the English language.

It's a no-brainer. Those lessons in character will pay life-long dividends, but those win-at-all-costs championships will quickly lose their luster. Sounds hokey, but it's true.

Sorry, but I don't accept the entire premise of the question. Don't mean to argue semantics or split hairs here, but to me part of what makes a "quality program" IS wins, and winning consistently. That being said, I do NOT believe in winning at ANY cost...

Terry, take a peek at my e-mail addy, & it might make a little more sense to you. Besides, we all have a bit of demon in us......just doesn't always show. ;)

is the thought behind the question - a 'quality program' cannot win or that a 'winning program' is not honest...

here's some examples of both, surely all of these teams are both quality and winning programs, right?

I have to agree with what you've said crimsonaudio. My original question aside, you CAN have both to a certain degree......it just takes a HC willing to put fourth the extra effort. I could be wrong, but I believe CMS is that kind of guy.

the question is what level of football is the team playing

if it's high school, you need a "quality program" attitude

it it's the NFL, you need a "win at all costs" attitude because owners are fickle and will fire you over which leg you put in the your pants first

if it's college, you have to have a winning attitude, but the kids are skill in the learning process and are still sometimes immature and still growing into the men they will become so you need the quality program aspect

It is possible to have both as an end result. However, I feel the question here is your motive, the basis of the program on which everything else is built. If that's the case, it's not possible to start with both. I have coached junior high basketball for 20 years, and the basis of our program is character, academics, and representing our school in the best possible way. Sometimes the only thing the public will know about your school is how your teams handle themselves. It is very hard in today's society and culture to build an entire program on character. Insisting that kids live right, act right, and represent well on and off the field, rubs a lot of people the wrong way. It is however worth it! (Train up a child in the way he should go, and he will not depart from it). The end result can co-exist through perseverance, blood, sweat, and tears. My team this year had a collective GPA of 3.6, most achieved honor society, and we were very formidable on the court with a 13-4 record.

Class and Character are first and foremost!!!
