Re: Question about bikcycle riding for exercise.

Stay with it. And if AT ALL possible, find a non-car trail. We have a fantastic rails-to-trails thing here that's 41 miles long, and involves zero cars (save for a few back-country road crossings). I don't ride where cars are, partly because I'm skeered of folks like Tide1986 (;)), and partly because I'm considerate, but mostly because Hattiesburg is populated by a staggering quantity of the most clueless drivers in America. Heck, I try to stay on untravelled roads when I'm in my car around here. :)

When I starting riding my bike a couple of years ago, I was relatively fresh off some cancer treatments & surgery. Thus, I still recall the first time I made it to 5 miles without stopping...then 10 miles...(etc.) Since starting, I've dealt with 2 additional surgeries (metastatic melanoma sucks!) As REO Speedwagon once sang, Keep Pushin' On. It'll come surprisingly soon, but don't hurt yourself trying to hurry it along. I'm FAR from a bike gladiator, but my very easy ride now is either 15 or 16 miles, all pushing pretty hard (for me, and I'm old & missing some key muscles & ribs & such thanks to cancer...). My record is 52 miles; I'm hoping to ride all 82 miles of our trail in one ride some time in a couple of months. And then a century ride early next year.

All of that said to say again, stay with it. And enjoy!

p.s. - despite my advanced age & excessive shortness, I'm not nearly the goofiest looking dude on the trail in my bike gear. You probably won't be either. Try not to guffaw at some of the outfits you'll see; being laughed at offends people apparently. :D But in the words of a friend, "ya know, Spandex ain't for everybody!"
