Barker only completed 3 passes in that game for less than 80 yrds and no TDs. The play calling was very conservative because Miami had a very good Defense. Bama's Defense won the game. Jay just did not loose it.

You hit the nail.

Who cares? If you are running a ball down someone's throat, or the defense is wiping the field with them then you certainly don't want your qb to start doing things that are unnecessary. It is one position that can cost a team a game very quickly with just a few errors.

This thread has taken Jay Barker's own statements regarding the benefits of running the scout team, and turned them into a debate as to whether, in view of the fact that we beat Miami in the 1993 Sugar Bowl, he could possibly have been developed further in season of 1992.

First, unless you know something more than Jay Barker, Jay should be the final authority on this. He made the statement that running the scout team would have been beneficial to his development, especially early on. 'Nuff said.

Second, that in no way speaks to winning the 1993 Sugar Bowl game.

Third, Barker himself played average at best in the game. He managed it well, and was instrumental in a key TD in the third quarter. Both positive. But he was also 4 of 13 passing, or something close to that, with two interceptions, no TDs and a total of less than 100 yards. All negative. Balancing out to average at best.

We won that game because of the OL, resultant running game, and the best defense in the history of college football to that point.

And while every single one of those points regarding the 1993 Sugar Bowl is true, they are also irrelevant to Barker's own point about the benefits to a young QB of running the scout team.

How the discourse goes from Barker's statement, and how running the scout team affets Star Jackson's chances for playing time, to this point is beyond me.

I believe Star will definitely challenge and get ample P/T. I anticipate that our offense will be good enough to get Star in as a reliever....much more than with GMac this year.

Who knows what could happen in this scenario?:BigA:

I do think running the scout team all year - especially against our defense - will have helped Star. Hoerver, if he really can't 'read' a zone defense, it doesn't look good at all for him to be the starter in 2009.

I think A.J. will be right in the mix come fall. I still think experience and knowledge of the system will be key for any of the three. If you can't read defenses, check down, have a feel for the pocket raw talent will just lead to canon arm picks, or three and outs.
AJ might be in the mix to run the scout team. He needs some time in the S&C program.

I'm so glad next years O is going to be that good. As of now next years tested-n-dependable list includes (1)WR (2)OL (1)FB and(1)RB if the RB doesn't go pro. Coach J-Mac will earn his money. What we WILL SEE fo-sho will be talent running everywhere,,,,,,, even when some go down with injuries. Spring and fall camps are going to be spirited to say the least.
