Question for the experts about the API offense

rom what I've read on this Franklin offense and its philosophy - using fast, smaller players allows the offense to step up the speed of the game, i.e.; running plays within about 20 sec between plays, using no huddle, and it increases substantially the number of offensive plays per game. The Defenses have a hard time getting set, and, also, this Offense has an easier time of making adjustments.

While teams with larger, fast players may hold the advantage initially; by the middle of 3rd Qtr and into the 4th Qtr, the bet is that many teams won't be able to keep pace and their defense will be "Gassed".

Any one think this "game changing" scheme might work? Seems to me CPB did this with his teams in the early 60's. I just hope by the time of the Auburn game our Defense will be stout, in great condition, and have reasonably good depth.

Thanks All

In a perfect world, that theory would hold. We'll see how a mid-major offense works in the real world. We've faced a similar offense in Leach's, and his credentials certainly outweigh Franklin's...

If All-Barn's offense does not pick up first downs, they better have a ton of depth on defense because they are going to spend a lot of time on the field. Their hurry up approach can backfire as far as their defense is concerned.

I'm really not trying to flame All-Barn, but I just don't see them winning the West this year. They lost some key players last year. They have to break in a new QB with very little or no D-1 experience and they have two new coordinators.

We get them in Tuscaloosa this year and I really feel this is the year their streak against us ends.

In our case, the difference between a so-so year and an outstanding year comes down to how quickly our new guys develop. That and injury luck...

I think this is what it all comes down to for us.

If the new guys step up and if we can stay away from the injury bug, I can see a big year in Tuscaloosa.

Mid-major in schemes and as recruiting classes go, soon to be mid-major in talent. Two 'wrongs' don't make a right, do they?

..... but , 3 lefts make a right :D

I really believe :bigear:'s has surrendered . He tried to leave & couldn't find a pimp with enough cash to pay his way out . He now has the Saban rule in place but still , he cannot recruit . Singning snappers , midget WR's & a new hot shot juco WR/P - what a joke .

I think I'll have another :)

api is becoming a mid-major right in front of our eyes, I love it. I wonder how long before the barners start complaining about their new "revolutionary" offense.

To be honest, AU never makes a lot of noise in recruiting...but seems to win 9-11 games a year anyway...this with an SEC schedule. That said...

I don't see AU winning the west. A lot of folks wanna talk about LSU losing it's starting QB, D coordinator, and best defensive player. AU lost BOTH coordinators, is installing a new system, lost it's starting QB, and it's best defensive player...yet most have them winning the west??

As far as wearing defenses down, Saban teams will be in top condition...period. So will any top SEC team...such as LSU, UF, UGA, et al.

I am tired of people saying stuff like "Auburn's never makes much noise in recruiting." Really? Just using Rivals rankings:
2002: #6
2003: #11
2004: #21 *NOTE, the was right after jet gate
2005: #13
2006: #10
2007: #7
2008: #20

Final AP rankings in the same time span:
2002: #14
2003: #30
2004: #2
2005: #14
2006: #9
2007: #15

So average Rivals ranking (not counting 2008 since the season hasn't started) : #11.3333
Average AP final ranking: #14

Doesn't seem to be overachieving to me.....

This offense can be very effective, particularly when it has a talent advantage over the defense. Auburn should beat the ever-loving crap out of teams weaker than it is.

The problem is, if it's based of the same HS system Franklin sells on the side, the offense starts to misfire when it sees a defense that has equal or better athletes. There is no magic offense in college football and Franklin's been pumping this same offense for years; if it was the magic bean, someone else would have been growing beanstalks by now.

Defenses that don't have a lot of depth or speed are going to get eaten alive. If AU is still running this offense next year and playing SW Sisters of the Poor, I would fully expect to see some 70-14 scores.

The problem's going to come when they face LSU, Alabama, Georgia, etc., which have 220-240 pound linebackers who can run 4.6s on the corner and an entire secondary a 4.5 or better. To reiterate, I've seen this offense in operation at the HS level firsthand many times before, and as soon as the team faced a defense better than its offense was, the magic ended right there.

What UA will have to be careful of is the same thing that got Bama beat by ULM last year: Short passes over the middle to backs and tight ends that eat up 7 yards per play. It's the weakness of Saban's defensive scheme and AU's offense can exploit it.

I'd been worried about exactly the same scenario. However, I'm beginning to see a little light at the end of the tunnel. I'm beginning to think our LB situation may be better than I thought it could be, if Hall is back and Reamer continues to come along. And, by AU-time, a couple of our talented freshman LBs will be virtual sophomores, in terms of experience. The other secret weapon against this offense is disruption, spelled "T. Cody." If he also continues to come along and demand doubles, as I anticipate, there will be a blitzing LB in Burns' (or Todd's) face almost every play. Should be an interesting chess match...

I totally agree- To me the barn has more question marks and issues than LSU and BAMA combined, and yet their the pick to win the west? I just don't see it. To me, LSU and BAMA has a much better shot at winning the SEC. I'm not writing off MissSt either.

I see the barn scoring lots of points/blowing out lowly mediocre teams like Furman, etc, but I seriously doubt they can do that on the top caliber SEC teams. I watched a replay of the 2007 LSU/ARK game recently and realized it took 3 OT's for each team to score 42 points. SEC teams just don't blow each other out very often. It happens, (ala 41-17 BAMA/TN :) ) but not consistently. As others have pointed out it puts significant stress on the defense too. Wingnut is a gambler and this may be his biggest gamble yet. JMO.

I'm not sure they have enough talent....

To run this type of offense but then again what do I know. If this offense starts to misfire tubs will take over and go back to what they have done best and that is to run the football but will that cause friction between him and Franklin? They are going to miss their QB because he had tons of experience and I'm not sure they have one that can step in and play with the SEC big boys at this time.
