The administrators decided to eliminate the spelling bee, because they feel it runs afoul of the mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

"No Child Left Behind says all kids must reach high standards," Newman said. "It's our responsibility to find as many ways as possible to accomplish this."

The administrators agreed, Newman said, that a spelling bee doesn't meet the criteria of all children reaching high standards--because there can only be one winner, leaving all other students behind.

"It's about one kid winning, several making it to the top and leaving all others behind. That's contrary to No Child Left Behind," Newman said.

I think Ms. Newman needs to held back a grade or two...

"Does that mean that everybody gets to be valedictorian? "

Just what we need, 180 valedictory speeches about the Yellow Brick Road and Our Obligations to the Black Race.

Crikey, where do they dig up these dopey school officials?

"There was no debate at all. It was one of the easiest decisions," the assistant superintendent said because "there was no question among the administrators" that a spelling bee was "contrary to the expectations" of No Child Left Behind.

Now we need a new federal program, NALB (No Administrator Left Benumbed). Nothing short of brain transplants will cure this school district.

Both the Principal and Super seem to have an agenda that they are pushing (Could be stupidity!). I don't see anything wrong with NCLB.

The only thing wrong with NCLB is that Congress didn't fund it. Not Bush's fault.

It's a good concept that oughta be given a chance to work. And a little seed money.

Why don't we take out sports and field day while we're at it!!!!

Last week in business law we were playing a jeopardy game using laws, and amendments and everything we've learned so far to win bonus points for our test, my team came in second and one of the guys asked if we could get points for coming in second and my teacher(also the basketball coach) responded "No, I believe you either win or you lose." What's wrong with a spelling bee other than teaching kids how to spell and praising the ones who do it well??? NOTHING!!!!

No funding is "cop out". Schools get money, they just allocate in other places besides the classroom.

Like supposedly in Cobb County(where I live and go to school) every child in middle and high school will have a lap top...I find it stupid as do many teachers, other students, teachers and parents but that's what the School Board wants to do with the money instead of giving the teachers a little bit more money, or upgrading county schools.
