Okay, now we are playing for respect. Overcoming our own mistakes against the second seed yesterday went a long way in restoring confidence. That game could have been a blowout in our favor had those miscues not been made. However, it could have been a blowout against us had we not worked through those mistakes.
Coach Wells made his traditional postseason gambles and he was 3 for 3. Starting Woody, pinch hitting Beagle, and the double steal. All three were step-outs that seemingly paid off. I know that I questioned pinch hitting for the hot bat of Hecklinski as I believe that the lefty against righty theory is overrated. First pitch...2 run RBI double for Beagle.
If one more person asks me about Tankersley, I'll scream. Tank is still the most talented pitcher on the staff. He's going through a little arm fatigue. However, he's still hitting 88 on the gun. We just need other guys to step up like Taylor has done time after time. He will rest this summer and be back strong. He will be back to All American form shortly. And I'm not so sure that he will not play a big role in a crucial game this season. Competitors compete and Tankersley is the definition of a competitor.
We are where we want to be today with one of the hottest pitchers in the country taking the hill. Carter will be looking for revenge against a beat up Auburn team in front of 10,000 fans. The tigers will cower when they hear the mighty rumblings of the charging pachyderms. LEONARDS LOSER...AUBURN!
If the new season started yesterday, we are 1-0.

"We don't really care if it is Auburn or the Yankees." --Coach Jim Wells when asked about the AL/AU showdown in Hoover.

Can someone tell me why Beagle or Redding is not is left field? How many dropped balls and/or misreads does it take?

Anyway, congratulations on the win. You guys have us at a bad time (Auburn wise) with Huddleston hurt and Bell out for the season. But, beating Sowers yesterday gives us some "mo" going into the game.

Also, I cannot believe some of you aren't up in arms over Coach Wells' statement about the pitching staff. He must not have any confidence in "any of them", but Carter and Reed now. "Looking for guys to help us win." ?? He should have already had a pen developed this late in the season. Some of those 20-2 and 15-1 games could have developed a group that has wasted away on the pine all year AND NOW he wants to throw them to the wolves. Someone explain it to me, because I don't understand.??

38, Tell your brother congratulation from an Auburn guy. He pitched well yesterday until he got tired.

I think the problem, WarEagleBB, is that the Tide didn't have many 20-2 or 15-1 games this year.

No time to worry about that now, though. I'm very confident with Carter taking the hill tonight, and the bats were pretty good last night, we just can't take any innings off.

we aren't up in arms about Wells' statement because it is dead on. We haven't had those games you mention this year because none of our pitchers could hold leads in those types of games. Whenever Wells would bring in someone in a blowout, they let the opponent back in the game.

Tournament time is when the pitchers MUST step up and throw some big time games. And believe me, no pitcher on this team has "wasted away on the pine". If you had watched many of our games this year, you'd know that what Wells said is unfortunately right on with the way our pitchers have performed, for the most part.

Oh yeah, congrats Woody on a great game. Just wish he would haven't gotten some chances on the weekend during the regular season.

WarEagleBB,
I can't tell you why Beagle's not playing.

As far as Coach Wells' statement, I somewhat agree. However, I think he has confidence in more than Carter and Reed. I think he has confidence in several guys, including Jared. Yes, we have seen some pitchers ride the pine a little much, but when you are losing to teams like West Alabama, Jax State, and Samford, you can't afford to have a multitude of pitchers. I do believe that the 16-1 complete game Carter pitched could have been done a little differently.
By the way, WarEagle, I'll be sitting with Oscar Gamble at the game, stop by and say hello.
