Ranking the SEC coaches: Richt leads talent-rich SEC
4. Nick Saban, Alabama. You love him. You hate him. But you don't ignore him. Why? Because you're scared to death of what his presence on the opposing sideline means. Some say Saban is overrated as a tactician. And that may be true. But Saban has no peer when it comes to recruiting. Factor that in with his NFL experience, and you have the makings of an SEC monster in Tuscaloosa.

4) Saban: The Prince of Darkness. A National Title at LSU. The fear and loathing of the rest of the college football universe.

I like when people say things like that about our coach.

One thing's for sure. The SEC has the best collection of coaches top to bottom, bar none.

I look for the SEC to become even more competitive than now, with even less seperating first from 4th.

RANKING THE SEC COACHES with changes.

1. Mark Richt, Georgia

2. Nick Saban, Alabama

3. Urban Meyer, Florida

4. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina

5. Les Miles, LSU

6. Tommy Tuberville, Auburn

7. Sylvester Croom, Mississippi State

8. Houston Nutt, Ole Miss

9. Bobby Johnson, Vanderbilt

10. Bobby Petrino, Arkansas

11. Rich Brooks, Kentucky

12. Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee. The Sordid events in Fatboys worthless life have percluded him from being worth a darn. What could have been and what will be is his storyline in history. First the stabbing of Johnny Majors, then the attempted assassination of Alabama Football with the help of the NCAA shoe shine boys.

Think SOS is overrated now and IMO Urban Meyer is a better coach than Richt.
I agree 100%.

When Shula was fired and Mal Moore spoke with Spurrier, I was hoping and praying he would not be our next coach. At best, Spurrier was my third choice to be our next head coach.

I've said this in other threads, but to me Spurrier does not have the same fire he had when he was at Florida. I thought he seemed to be losing his fire the last couple of years he was at Florida.

I have only to consider the source. Tom Deinhart, who has been generously described as "aggressively dumb", rarely knows what he's talking about when it comes to college football.
The person who first said "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak up and remove all doubt." was undoubtedly at the time thinking specifically of Tom Deinhart.

Absolute ranking are too subjective. Too many perceptions and misconceptions can cloud the picture. Richt is a hell of a coach and this could be his year, but it is too soon to anoint him the best.

The only objective ranking is their championship records and it breaks them out into tiers:

Tier I --Coaches who have won National Championships:
Fulmer, Meyer, Miles, Saban, and Spurrier.

Tier II -- Coaches who have won conference championships:
Tuberville, Richt; Brooks, Petrino (not SEC)

Tier III --Coaches who have won division championships:
Nutt

Tier IV --Coaches who have won no championships:
Croom, Johnson

I'm curious as to what criteria you used to rank Richt over CNS. Coach Saban took over a downtrodden program at LSU and in 5 years he accomplished more than what Richt has in 7 years at UGA despite taking over a pretty healthy program.

In addition, CNS left behind a program good enough to win another SECC and NC. Richt appears to be poised to maybe win a NC, but he has shown a tendency to fail in the big games before.

I know this isn't going to be popular, but I think Tuberville belongs in the top 5. I think there is no doubt that he is done a good job at Auburn, and he has them in the mix every year. As much as I dislike Auburn I can take my Crimson colored glasses off long enough to give them credit.

I unfortunately agree. Tuberville should be ranked ahead of Spurrier based, if nothing else, on the last 3 seasons. This too isn't going to be popular but at this point Miles and Meyer probably should be ranked ahead of CNS.

I wouldn't put much stock in this guy's ratings, either way. He had Miles 10th last year, that's under the fired Orgeron.
