It seems necessary to care 2 or maybe 3 RB's on your roster who are not redshirted. I have had to go with my 3rd string RB even while running with my FB too. Until they get their stamina up (Jr or Sr) you will need some quality backups. I run about 75% of the time, still trying to master passing, so they come in handy. I run the FB a lot too (Castille) is is good.

When recruiting RB's I look for about a 200 lb Rb that has good speed and hands. Everything else is icing.

Presence would be nice, but I am usually controlling him so that negates that attribute. Speed is necessary to get around the corner or break away to go for 6. Hands are huge. You don't want to be down by 5 with 1:00 left and running out the clock on the 5 yard line and go for a last second TD and then fumble. Turnovers in this game can determine the winner and loser very easily.

I look for speed and hands. That makes your RB a serious threat when he makes it to the outside and gives you a huge matchup advantage when you send your RB out on pass routes...especially go routes when you catch the defense with one or no safeties.

Speed and Size

I look for RB's that have around 4.3 speed and weigh over 200 lbs. Their ranking doesnt matter and it doesnt matter how many stars they have. Yes, hands matter too, but I look at those AFTER I look at the first two.

I was lucky enough to get the #1, #2 and #4 ranked RB's after my first season. The top guy has 4.3 speed and weighs 220 lbs with great hands. So, now I have a guy that can burn the corners and break 10 tackles per game as well.

I also look at their tendancies. If they have 4.3 speed, but are listed as balanced.... then you know you got a good back on your hands. On the other hand, if they have a 4.7 forty, and it has them as a speed back.... dont recruit em.

Usually I do yeah. They dont seem to be as durable or as able to break tackles as the bigger backs. Keep in mind that I usually run the ball around 80-85% of the time, so I need a back that can wear down a defense... and yes, defenses DO wear down in this version. I get most of my rushing yards late in the third quarter and in the fourth quarter.

Will I recruit a RB that weighs 160 lbs? Yeah, if that is all that is available. I have been known to put a WR or CB at RB if I cant recruit what I want though. Atleast in this version their overall rating changes with the position change. In 2k3 and 2k4, I'd have to guess by just going on his speed and size. It was funny having a WR win the heisman tho with only like 10 catches for the season. ;)
