I looked over the lists on rivals this week and did a little math, Seems Alabama's average committment to this point is 2.8, Auburns is 3.5.

I'd like to get folks thoughts on this but I don't want to hear the usual excuse about stars don't mean nothing. I do realize they truely do mean nothing and its all about what you do with them but we don't have a chrystal ball, this is the only ruler we have to measure them by at this time.

I'm also a little surprised that the 5 star linebacker they signed being ranked number one, at 6 foot and only 200lb I'm not sure if he has that much upside, oh dont' get me wrong, he may be very good, but I'm just surprised he was ranked number one.

Do you actually know what the stars mean?

Don't let the stars get in your eyes
Don't let the moon break your heart

I know what you mean about the star system on rivals but if you look at I think it is Max Emfinger's star system he has lot of our players listed higher like Barnes is like 3 star on rivals and emfinger is 4.25 simpson 5 star schreiber I think that is how you spell it is a 5 star so I think that the star system is a good measure but varies in opinon.

If you're referring to Alabama, they don't have a 5 star linebacker ranked #1 in this recruiting class

I think he is referring to auburn. some kid out of lagrange tray blackmon is 6'0 and he the #1 LB. i think

Correct. UGA fans are up in arms over the fact that they couldn't land a commitment from him.

Sorry for the typo, yes the LB Auburn signed recently.

Answer: no, I don't know what the stars mean, I assume more is better than less, right.

I also did a review of tennessee, they are 3.5 as well, I didn't add it up but Georgia looks pretty much right at that as well,

We have a lot of 2 star players where ther other schools have almost none or none at all.

The other quirck is that we have a larger number committed at this point than the others.

Stars do mean nothing. they are just some guy's opinion of a player. If these recruiting experts were as good at evaluating talent as they think they are, they would be evaluators for NFL teams, making a lot more money than they are right now. Do you think these people have actually watched every high school player and can give an honest evaluation on every player in high school?

i'll tell you

Since no one else wants to say it,We are getting our butt kicked by the barn in recruiting this year.Sure i know we are in on alot of good kids, stars don't mean nothing,we are filling our needs, etc. etc. etc. The bottom line is the barn, lsu,ga,ut,and fl fills there classes with trus blue chippers.we probably will fininsh in the top 20,but about 5th in the sec.Coach Shula is doing a pretty good jod, considering we basically have did nothing recruiting over the past few years.Last year was a ok.We are going to have to step it up even more if we want to compete, and the rankings do mean something....if you can coach, had you rather coach a 6'2" 205 lbs. 4.4 corner or a 5'10" 180 lbs 4.45 corner...it does make a difference

I've recently been watching videos of our commits and our current targets and I love what I see.

I also just got some "inside info" on our targets, and I must say, we will be very pleased if things continue the way that they are progressing. :D

Right on LTBamaFan -- WG is going to be very successful in his days at the Capstone and look forward to seeing him on Sundays if he keeps improving as he is. The star system is too subjective and varies widely from expert to expert [definition of exspert: ex-something that was and spert-a fast drip].

Look at 5 star Riggs he's been at Poxville for 4 years now and hasn't accomplished much except I hear he excels at chair stacking. I believe a 5 star should start as a freshman and play all four years. Of course, it's all about coaching and Sanders has a hard time coaching his way out of a paper bag.

Lee, aren't you being a bit overdramatic?

February is a ways off and a lot can change between now and then. I hate to burst your bubble but last years class was a good one and this one appears to be as good, maybe even better. Have a little faith.

If it makes you feel better, I've noticed that quite a few big name players have scheduled visits to Alabama: Mike Davis, Fred Rouse, Brandon Deadrick all have visits scheduled. I'm not saying that Alabama signs all of them but I wouldn't be surprised to see them sign at least one.

The atar rankings

LT bamafan and others
1* means only that the player(WG) in this case is a prospect, but has not been scouted enough to be ranked by the service.
However, any recruit with a 2* or more has been scouted and rated by that service.
5* impact player and potential starter as a Fr.
4* contribute as a FR.and potential starter by so.
3*contribute by so. potential starter by Jr.
2* role player and potential starter by Senior.
If you look at this list in this way it is easy to understand and makes sense, however all the services have personal bias by the people that do the evals, but thats all we can look at til they actually play.

As someone that used to read all the recruiting mags and compare 5 star players I can tell you that the best players IMO are the ones that are not so highly ranked. Many times the rank is for physical maturity without regard to emotional maturity. I have seen many 2 and 3 star players become anchors for their position as they progress in the program. I have been disappointed by an even greater number of can't miss 5 stars that never amount to anything but trouble if they even get into school.

right on the money

I shouldn't have to say this, but here goes. Stars don't NECESSARILY mean diddly. They are, as previously stated, simply someones opinion, qualified or not. The ONLY, and I mean ONLY people that are really qualified to evaluate the type of player that they want for their particular system, are the coaches. Anyone knows that it takes a combination of several types of players to make a great team. Look no further than ut for proof that a stable full of 4 & 5 "star" recruits guarantees you nothing.......except maybe exactly the kind of problems ut seems to be rife with. Can you say too many ego's in one place.

The stars system also doesn't take into account a team that is replacing players by need. It is insane to think a team just recruits by stars. We need running backs. Does anyone think we can recruit 4 or 5 five star running backs in the same class? or get the top two or three five star quarterbacks in the same class? It just isn't going to happen.

When I see this topic over and over and over about the stars it tells me that someone isn't reading the other threads where we redundantly explain the stars. There is a lot of time between now and National Signing day and no recruit is a lock till he sends his letter of intent back to the university with his signature on it. Many of the top recruits wait till the last few days to decide exactly where they intend to play. It makes for good discussion and good debate but this star thing is nothing but someone's opinion. Someone who is trying to make a living off recruiting.
