Question: Referee’s announcing penalties

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

I swear I’ve seen it but don’t know where. I wanted to know if AHSAA allowed referees to announce penalties. Our PA guy is awful and everything is “illegal procedure” and he never gets down to the rest of it. I was looking to see about buying a mic system for the white hat to wear so he could just announce what was up.
If anyone knows what is needed that would be helpful.

Some white hats will mic up to announce but mostly for televised games. Most really don't want a mic around them :). However, they are supposed to announce the infraction with both hand signals and voice towards the press box.

No, you’re not allowed if you mic up the refs nor is the PA allowed to say a player’s name/number if he has the penalty information. I’ve been a PA for the past 21 seasons. It’s explained by the AHSAA to us every year what we’re supposed to do and not. Infraction and yardage yes. Player info, no

Yeah what the AHSAA wants done is out the window at my school. Dude got suspended a few years ago for going down the hall and verbally assaulting the clock ref for not stopping the clock and letting like 20 seconds run off after a score. He got sent to Montgomery for class. Does nothing that he was told. Yaps constantly between plays like he’s the center of attention. I did find a school that mics the head ref. I just need to find the equipment and make sure it works with our PA system.
