No player would play for a coach for lying like this; I think the story is a hoax.
I agree with both AuDub and twofbyc.
The wording is evasive. He could leave OM and still maintain that nothing he said was untrue.
But calling a meeting of the players to put that tap-dance out in public strikes me as strange, and potentially stupid.
If he’s really not going to Auburn, why not call a meeting and say so in simple language without the obviously crafted wording?
If he’s headed to the barn, or if he’s not sure, and is going to deliver a non-denial denial, why call the meeting at all?
And let‘s not get too high and mighty. Saban flat out said he wasn’t coming to Alabama…..yet he did.
to the media - he didn’t call a team meeting and tell his players that.
I haven’t seen a verbatim transcript of what he said to his team, but “hey guys, it’s all good - we’re gonna kick doggie butt”, if that’s the summary of what he said, was a colossal mistake on his part; or he told them he ain’t going anywhere.
I find it impossible to believe recruits aren’t watching this unfold with interest; if he leaves now it will be used against him (successfully, I’d believe) in recruiting, and I just don’t think he’s that stupid. He does like to play games, though; maybe he’ll call a news conference Friday and say “I’m still here”. I just can’t believe he’d handicap his career (at least as far as recruiting goes in the SEC) by doing and saying everything he has to this point, and then going to the Barn. Calling the team meeting was a red line he won’t be able to cross without consequences, IMO. Neither Saban nor Tubby did that (although I wouldn’t put it past that carpetbagger).
