Thanks for this.Renowned disease expert Michael Osterholm gives warning to prepare for future pandemics
His comments on the state of affairs in the CDC as a result of Trump and RFK
Some things were an overreach since this was new territory. Better to err on the side of caution. The covid vaccines were not and provided much protection and saved many, many lives. Thanks for this.
It feels like few people were so anti-vax when the Covid-19 vaccines were first introduced, but the trust in science was shaken by a few things:
- the debate over masking, which turned out to be largely useless
- the use of clear barriers that were not sealed seemed silly to a lot of people (and they were)
- the massive shutdowns of entire industries based on the fears of how deadly Covid-19 was, when in reality a vast majority of those who died were either immune-compromised or had a few comorbidities
- the vaccine's reported effectiveness, which changed over time, initially promising to keep you from getting Covid-19 then promising not to keep you well but to minimize its effects.
Most of these were intentionally bad decisions or even misleading at the time (though I still cannot believe we allowed entire industries to be completely shut down), but in the minds of many who already don't trust the government, aided and abetted by some of Trump's (and other elected 'leaders') comments, lowered the trust level even further.
Yes, there were anti-vax people pre-Covid-19, but they were pretty far outside the norm. The conflation of misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine and ALL vaccines has been astonishing to me, to the point that being anti-vax (meaning all vaccines, even those with 50+ years of proof of working with virtually zero side effects) is somewhat normalized now. Especially with RFK jr acting a fool.
Ultimately the science WILL win out, it might just happen at the cost of millions of lives lost due to basing their beliefs in sound-bytes rather than realizing you cannot lump all vaccines into one pile as if they're the same.
i had someone (a very smart and successful person) tell me a couple of weeks into the pandemic that masks caused suffocation and that he knew someone who knew someone who had a friend that died from wearing a mask. the misinformation that caused a lot of the “distrust†in science and vaccines started almost immediately and was magnified and spread by way too many people. Some things were an overreach since this was new territory. it made a horrible situation much worseThe misinformation was a torrent that spewed forth upon the social media in a Biblical flood...
I agree, for the most part. Some things were an overreach since this was new territory. Better to err on the side of caution. The covid vaccines were not and provided much protection and saved many, many lives.
Oh yeah, there were those who were going to push back from the get-go no matter what. Sadly, they likely caused some people to suffer and / or die unnecessarily.i had someone (a very smart and successful person) tell me a couple of weeks into the pandemic that masks caused suffocation and that he knew someone who knew someone who had a friend that died from wearing a mask. the misinformation that caused a lot of the “distrust†in science and vaccines started almost immediately and was magnified and spread by way too many people.

My point is that covid was the perfect springboard for those who already distrusted the government and big pharma to go all in. And instead of limiting it to covid treatments, it spread like wildfire to ALL vaccines, ALL immunology, etc. The foolishness has been every bit as contagious as covid.
Without realizing it we all probably know many who are still alive as a result of closures, mandated or not. I guess it should be viewed through the lens of 'the greater good'. 🤷â€Â♂ï¸ÂI agree, for the most part.
That said, forcing people to close their businesses as a protective measure should not have been done, imo. I know far too many people who lost everything due to the shutdown mandates.

Well... in response to RFK... it is a free country and we can push and cajole everyone to be healthy, but we don't have the legal means to enforce it.
Maybe start off with a ban on all softdrinks and a legal mandate that we can only drink unsweetened coffee, tea, and water? That would be HUGE.
And yeah, people would really go for that...
This is the point I was trying to make.
There are way better ways to effect results. You just have to understand marketing and sales, which many do not.
Flies to honey instead of vinegar, etc.
What happened during Covid really damaged a lot of the CDC and government's credibility because of their heavy hand.
