In Rudy’s Hall of Fame acceptance, he gave a big shout out to RH.

He's out of his mind.

Just because a guy happened to play for seven teams that closed the deal doesn't miraculously transform him into a Hall of Famer. He hit a couple of big shots. Fine. But there's more to being in the Hall than "guy who got some wide open shots to win games because better players were being covered by the opposition."

Someone lay out the case for Horry.

Please.

"He played for Alabama and I like him" is not a valid argument. I mean, I liked Tony Brizzolara on the Braves, too, but he's not going in the Hall.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.
Hall of very good.

He was in the right place in the right time for much of his career and did hit some clutch shots, but his resume just isn't up to snuff.

I'm just glad Ben Wallace finally got in. Guy should have been first ballot because of his legendary defensive play but because he wasn't a flashy offensive threat he got put off.

I looked up the requirements and honesty there's nothing there to say he shouldn't be in. I think some of us are putting more stock into things that aren't considered for a HOF inductee:

Players are eligible after they’ve spent four full seasons in retirement. The same goes for coaches and referees, but because they have such long careers, they also become eligible after 25 years of coaching or refereeing. Other contributors to the game of basketball, such as journalists, are also eligible for the Hall of Fame if the committee judges they’ve made “a significant contribution” to the game. ---https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/celtics/paul-pierce-selected-2021-hall-fame-class
Horry is an enigma because hes one of the few players that wasnt an all-star that hand consistent and significant impact on helping win multiple championships for multiple teams. He single handedly won the '05 championship for the Spurs. There a number of all-stars that couldn't accomplish the same feats during their professional careers even though their stats may have been more compelling. They still fell short in helping their team win a championship.

Edit: If I'm reading correctly, the committee just has to vote unanimously that his career is hof worthy. It's not based on stats, it's based on a players contribution to the game. Horry doesn't have the "traditional" resume but he does have a compelling one based on the points I mentioned above. He not only was a consistent contributor to several championships being won, he was also the sole reason a few of these team won.

I would think a HOF Coach might know more about who belongs in the Hall than most of us
That right there is exactly how the baseball hall of fame became a disgusting joke, too.

All coaches know about the Hall is, “I love my players and they should be there.”

You’d think if this guy was such a Hall of Fame player that it would be easy to list why. But it isn’t for one reason - because he isn’t.

Horry is somewhere between the significant reason a team win the championship, and the pasty white coach’s son at the end of Duke’s bench who’s only contribution is to wave a towel. His ring is still just as big.

I just don’t think that is HoF worthy.

Does ANYBODY here think Jim Loscutoff belongs in the basketball Hall of Fame?

He has the exact same credentials as Horry - "he won seven rings!"

If his nickname was Big Shot Jim, sure

But Horry played in 4-5x more playoff games then Jim. Jim had much shorter paths to his 7 rings.

I think he’s worthy if you analyze his value to those teams during playoff runs.

He played the equivalent to 3 extra seasons worth of playoff games.

So again.....the ENTIRE CASE for Robert Horry for the Hall of Fame is......."he won seven rings," which is a TEAM accomplishment, not an individual one. Oh and, "well his coach says he ought to be."

I rest my case. If all anyone can tell me is, "Well, he played for a lot of teams that won titles," that doesn't say anything at all. Hank Bauer won seven World Series rings, too (but now something about how it was easier to win rings, right?)

Never led the NBA in ANY category. EVER. Nothing on offense, nothing on defense.

The entire case for Horry isn't that he has 7 rings. No one is making that argument. They're saying he deserves it because he made a lot of important shots at big moments.

I don't think he belongs in the Hall of Fame, but if he got in he wouldn't be the most undeserving. It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Guys with the best stats. Horry is certainly famous for making big shots. I can't really think of anyone that is known for being clutch like him. The other people known for making big shots tended to be more high profile all the time. Horry showed up when it mattered.

Horry was a starter on 5 of his 7 championship teams. The other 2 he was no. 6 in minutes per game (rotated with Horace Grant and Duncan). For those enamoured with individual stats I give you....Russell Westbrook,

Abstract ideas, like a player getting in on his defensive prowess… Wallace has one championship, led the league in blocks once, rebounds a couple of times, but he’s getting in on good defensive play, which isn’t exactly quantifiable.

Good post!

When they talk about great players they don't typically show their stats; they show their big moments/plays/shots.

Horry played a game beyond regular season stats.

Playoff Stats data is fun. When you look at his playoff contributions overall and then look at his late game heroics. It’s an interesting debate.

Horry is ranked #16 on that list. Is that taking every one of the categories/columns shown on that page into account?
