I'm not sure that line is worth drawing if it plunges us into a nuclear holocaust.
MAD is a thing for a reason, and I doubt Putin is insane enough to push us to that point knowing full well what the outcome is.

But if you wish to allow Putin to do whatever he wants without response because he has nukes, then I guess there's not much else to discuss because we will never see eye to eye.

I've always worked on the assumption that there were Bolsheviks among the red army and that the Bolsheviks at least cared about their own during the revolution. Until Stalin and then it went back to what it always was. Interesting that even this was wrong
Sorry. I was not trying to be flippant.
There doubtless were Bolsheviks in the Russian Army.
The great strength and weakness of Marxism was that Marxists said the Revolution was inevitable so you might as well get on the winning side.
The enormous weakness of Marxism was that the inevitability of the revolution excused the most heinous crimes. Since it was inevitable, who cares if a few million have to die to advance it? "One death," Stalin said, "is a tragedy. One million deaths is a statistic." That is the dreadful calculus of Marxism.
I always bear in mind that Bolsheviks, within a decade of the foundation of the USSR, were exporting trainloads of grain from Ukraine to Europe during a famine in Ukraine, called the Holodomor or "Terror Famine" in Ukraine. 3.5 million Ukrainians died in the Holodomor and I'm sure the Ukrainians fighting the Russians today remember that result of domination by Moscow.

The Russians have about the equivalent of a division in Kaliningrad (like three brigades, one of which is marine infantry), probably enough to hold the oblast.
Not enough to launch any offensive at all. It would be like throwing a punch with an arm that is not attached to anything. That punch would have no force and once thrown, the opponent would advance around the flanks of the punch and cut it off.

I'm not sure that line is worth drawing if it plunges us into a nuclear holocaust. We are not talking about 1 or 2 bombs being dropped, but hundreds, all over the planet. The beginning of all those post apocalyptic movies. I don't say that to be funny, I say it out of fear. Climate change will not matter anymore because the planet will be destroyed. I'm just not sure protecting Ukraine is worth ending life as we know it on this planet. As Spock would say, "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." The world doesn't need a nuclear war.

"In my humble opinion, in the nuclear world, the true enemy is war itself." -from the movie Crimson Tide
The goal is, by threatening nuclear war, it won't happen. Nobody wins a nuclear war.
On the other hand, the West sat by while Nazis annexed Czechoslovakia. Within two years, Nazis were invading France armed with, ... wait for it, Czech-made tanks. Cowardice today does not make the evil go away. It just makes it harder to defeat at a later date.
