Re: Saban rips South Florida

I dunno, I watched the PC on Monday, hardly seemed like he 'ripped' anyone - he just told it like it is...

Re: Saban rips South Florida

If you watch the PC, a reporter asked him why he thought teams like South Fla and other non-traditional powers are in the top 10. All he did was give an opinion of what may explain it. He singled out So. Fla because the reporter asked about them specifically. I actually thought it was complimentary towrds So. Fla and the quality of players they have.

Re: Saban rips South Florida

It was absolutely no big deal, yet it has taken on a life on its own because of ESPN, Colin Cowherd, etc...

I think the national Saban bashing is with us for a while. It's almost entertaining to see what "slam" each week brings.

Re: Saban rips South Florida

I shouldn't have used the word "rip" in the title; it sounds disrespectful toward Coach Saban. I found the article in CNNSI and that's how it was titled.

Just another case of the National media trying to look down their noses at Coach Saban.

Re: Saban rips South Florida

the quote was taken out of context. i heard the press conference and all CNS did was make an objective evaluation of the varied admission policies of different schools and how some schools are harder to get into than others. CNS applauded the system, which in no way is ripping South Florida. The quote came from the New York Daily News, which we all know is a psuedo tabloid that is barely that is somewhat more reliable than a People magazine. However, I respect Jim Leavett's coaching ability on the field, but I disrespect his off the field conduct towards Bama. He views the contract we faxed him years back as a bragging right, and he keeps it in his office to show people. If he got his feelings hurt, fine, just proves that he wouldn't be able to handle coaching the Crimson Tide.

I don't know about the eligibility/lack of it, of the USF players; but I do know USF HAS come a long way and they seem to be pretty legitimate.

Yes, but he was not only a full qualifier but an early enrollee at Alabama. He transferred to USF. As a nonqualifier, Ford was never enrolled at Alabama.
Yes, I remember now that you reminded me. Not the same situation as Ford.

Tubberware said the same thing before the Barn played USF. He made it a point to single out Mike Ford also.

Re: Saban rips South Florida

"Leavitt apparently thought that Saban was referring to schools' acceptance of non-qualifiers, and he mentioned that his school has only two such players - one starter, one sub. But Saban's focus - and the column's focus - was on the overall admissions standards, not simply on partial and non-qualifiers."

This was in the Birmingham News along with a quote from Coach Saban:

"There's a significant amount of players who don't qualify (at some schools) and they end up being pretty good players at some other schools," Saban said Monday. "I think there are six guys starting on South Florida's defense who probably could have gone to Florida or Florida State but Florida and Florida State couldn't take them."

Coach Saban's statement, as its printed here, seems to imply that the "six guys" couldn't go to UF or FSU because of grades/non-qualifying. Maybe they couldn't take them because of scholarship limits or some reasons not related to grades and the press seem to jumble everything together?

Coach Saban's intent was probably to be complementary of USF, but the words either didn't come out right or got twisted up by the media.

Re: Saban rips South Florida

This has been discussed before . . .

The Big East allows partial qualifiers, teams like WVU and Louisville, and SOUTH FLORIDA, have the advantage of taking players who are partial qualifiers,

I've said this about three times on this board, if they(B.E.) want to play for the BCS title and want to compete with the big dogs, then their conference should "MAN UP" and be under the same requirements that the SEC and ACC enforce. I realize that the conference can decide, but if they are allowed to take these athletes that are "academically challenged"(politically correct), then it's really not playing on a level playing field for all the BCS teams.
