Saban's length of stay

We all know that in the upcoming years, we as fans are going to have to deal with constent rumors dealing with Saban and opening college HC positions.

But a comment from a former boss of Saban's, Perles at Michigan State, in a Birmingham News article got me thinking. This is what he said:

"Perles said he anticipates that Saban will stay true to his word, but added that other coaching offers will come.

"Maybe one day he'll get an offer near where he's raised, maybe Pittsburgh or Penn State," Perles said. "Just take advantage of him as long as you can because he'll bring you a winner, and you'll have a lot of fun.

"That's just who Nick is. You get it all with him."

Does it seem that there may be a high possibility that Saban might bolt from Alabama as soon as the Penn State position comes available? It would be closer to home, and in an area that Im sure he would love to go back to. And it definitely looks like that Paterno is running on fumes, and probably does not have more than a couple more years in him, if that.

Many people have said that he most likely would not leave ALabama until he retires, because why would he leave unless he was going to another big time football school. Well, I think Penn State fits the description of a big time football school.

A move to Alabama from the NFL at this time would be a great decision for Saban if he was considering this. Staying and continuing to lose in the NFL for another year or so would more than likely have severly hurt his chances at getting the Penn State position when it does open in the next couple of years. So, go ahead and get back into college football, at a big name school like Alabama. Have a couple good/great/awesome seasons at Alabama, and be sitting pretty when the Penn State position comes open.

Throw in the kind of influence Terry has on her husband:she would probably like to be closer to home, in a nice football town.

I may just be worrying about nothing, but those comments in that article just got me wondering realistically how long Saban might stay. (I hope he retires here, just as most Bama fans.............so no flames please)

Don't take this wrong, but who cares... if he is hre 4 years, we will have either (maybe both) SEC champ rings and a NC ring. The cupboard will be so full that even Shula can come back and coach us to another championship.

Coach Saban is THAT good.

Like you said...there's no way to know. That's one of the risks with hiring Saban. However, I can't think of very many jobs he'd want to leave Bama for. Also, he's being paid a very large amount of money.

It's possible, very possible. While I am thrilled to have him as my coach, that was the big reason I wasn't 100% positive I wanted to hire him. I certainly won't be surprised if he leaves, but I won't be surprised if he stays either.

But I will say this---even if he does leave, if he were to stay 4 to 5 years, we would be in about the same shape LSU was when he left. That's leagues better than where we are now. It's because if that that I think his hiring was worth the risk of him eventually leaving.

I certainly get your point, I agree 100%.

But it would be nice to see some stability in the HC coaching position, instead of having to hire one every 2 to 4 years. (whether it be our, or his decision)

But I definitely agree that no matter how long Saban stays, we should see an extremely positive effect on our football program.

There is no need to worry about how long Nick Saban
will be at Alabama because there is a penalty clause in
his contract that says that he can't bolt and run to another
school unless we let him leave or we fire him.

I understand if you don't believe what I have told you in
this post but it's all the truth and I got my information from
somebody who is very close to the UA Athletic Department
and he proved to me that he was telling me the truth.

And so there is no need to worry about Nick Saban leaving
UA because he will most likely be with us until he retires.

Call me crazy or laugh at me if you wish but if it will make
you feel better you can even cuss me but I am telling you
the truth because I would not take the time to post this if
it were not true.

his length of stay may everything to do with how happy his family is. Maybe they were happy at LSU but he talked them into South Beach and the NFL to see if he could do it (they sacrificed for him). Now, getting up in age, not that he is that old, but getting close to that time of settling down, Bama could be the last stop or the next to the last one, only time will tell.

Hopefully he is at Bama for awhile with never ending success.

Well, it took us 20+ years so far to try and recover from Coach Bryants' departure and we're still working on it. I believe the hiring of CNS is perhaps the largest step towards moving the Bryant legacy to our storied past instead of being such a large part of our current psyche and the perception the rest of the nation has of us. Only time will tell how Nebraska fares in its quest to return to the national elite but I don't currently see anything in their program (and I do live in Big 12 country) that suggests they are well on their way beyond anything except mediocrity behind Texas and OU. Penn St and FSU will soon endure troubling times of their own as they try to move beyond the shadows of their respective legends.

Point is, in retrospect, would CNS have wanted to walk in Ray Perkins shoes? Probably not. And thats the kind of situation he'd be walking into at Penn St, imo. Ohio St might be a likely scenario also, but by the time Tressel leaves there he may be so entrenched at Bama that he wouldn't make the move. Having played his college ball at Kent St in Ohio, he really has no ties to any major university that could draw him "home". I think that if he fulfills his 8 year contract then he'll probably stay until he retires.

So Saban signed a contract that states thathe can't leave Bama unless we allow him to, or fire him?!?

Im not saying I don't believe you, but you can understand how hard that is to believe.

That is great for us, if it is true..........................unless Saban decides to stink it up in order to get fired (99.9% unlikely to happen though).

I'm not privy to his contract, but from what I'm hearing another team would have to REALLY throw some cash his way to beat what he'll be making here in a few years.

That being said, if he leaves us in the same shape he left LSU I don't really care if he leaves after 3-4 years...

By the way you can ask the head man of bamamag.com
about what I just told you because he will tell you the same
thing I just did.
As comforting as I would like that to be, that doesn't necessarily mean he won't leave. If he goes to Mal Moore and says, "I'm really not happy here and I want to go somewhere else very badly," I don't think Mal would say, "Too bad." We aren't going to keep a coach who doesn't want to be here and who's mind won't be on preparing the best team possible. If he really, really wants out (and I see no reason why he should, unless he really butts heads with the administration here), then we'll let him go and find a coach that wants to be here.

I hope Saban will stay with us the entire 8 years, but his past history suggests that he won't. also it IS rumored that his contract does not have a buyout clause. that caught my eye. He's had something like 14 jobs in 35 years of coaching, but then again, he has never coached anywhere like tuscaloosa. this guy will begin to realize very soon that he is even a bigger rock star than he ever was or would have been in baton rouge, and hopefully that combined with the overall quality of life will keep him and his family here for a very long time. I simply cannot imagine them wanting for anything while they are here. he and his family will get virtually anything they want and will be treated like royalty. what more can someone ask for?

Gonna try to help Earle out on this one as he has explained this far too many times.

There is no buyout clause in his contract but there are numerous lucrative incentives if he stays for the length of the contract. Earle has pointed out that this is generally more effective than a buyout clause.

A huge factor in Saban's length of tenure will be his wife. If she likes Tuscaloosa then he's more likely to stay put. I have a feeling she's missed the South quite a bit.

Saban struck me as a quiet and private kind of person. I'm not sure how well he'll take T-town-type worship.

I understand the incentive clauses. If I heard correctly, they amount to about 800K/per year in nothing but extra incentive bonus opportunity, if he hits all his numbers. but my point is, and believe me when i say i dont mean to be negative, that he can walk away at any time without any penalty. This is not a man that needs money.

Hey! If he leaves,....he leaves. I think the reception he got upon arrival is either overwhelming or scary to him and his family. how he is treated from here out will be a determining factor in his length of stay. Proximity to his vacation retreat also may factor in his decision, as it has been hinted that will be his retirement home as well.
Jeez, he just got here, and already some are asking when he will leave, real hospitable of us!

I don't really care have any worries regarding CNS's cotract . There is more to consider .

MM made a very interesting statement - http://www.finebaum.com/ - about the hiring process as far as who was one of our lead evaluators during the search . Ozzie Newsome was who Mal relied on . Quoting MM , " ... heavily ... ."

Ozzie was in Cleveland while CNS was there as a defensive coach . Many feel that ON will be the next AD and that it will not be very long before his time arrives . This transition is what will be the key to the length of CNS's stay in TitleTown . JOMO .
