An Algerian Jew pointed that out to me, as well. (Actually, its 1428 in the islamic calendar).
Be said that in 1420's in Europe, "Christians" were conducting pogroms against German Jews, witch-trials were going on, and the Inquisition was yet to come.

Now, I am not saying I buy the societal evolution theory, that all civilizations progress at the same general points of evolution at the same age, but it was an interesting point of view. My Algerian Jewish friend was suggesting that the west should not be too hard on islamic societies, but be patient.
