not exactly sure, but i think it has something to do with al jazeera (and qatar) coming from the non-wahhabi side.

I read they didn't particularly like the network's coverage of Arab Spring in Egypt.

My understanding is Al Jazeera will run very critical stories about Arabic governments, and they were the main outlet for al qaeda videos before social media sites were widely used.

I sort of suspected maybe Al Jazeera hadn't been too kind to the Saudi royal family...

I think that is part of it. The Saudis also want to be the driving force in the region and having a popular news source where they lack control is a hindrance to that effort
