SEC Clarifies Rule on AU Touchdown Pass

Clearly a legal play in that respect, because the rule states that as long as any part of the body is behind the LOS, it's a legal forward pass. Pretty much beyond dispute that was the case here.

In any event, though, does any of it really matter? Perhaps, but it would have put Auburn at 2nd and 15 at our 44-yard line. Still no guarantee they wouldn't have scored, I'm afraid. Auburn would have still had 32 seconds and 3 timeouts, so they could have possibly gotten another 6 or 7 plays in.

If that is the rule, I can say definitively it has been called erroneously many times. Not sure, is the rule the same in the pros? Because although I have seen it called, I can't remember whether it was college or pros.

Yep, gotta question that interpretation. Just about every rule out there involves the position of the ball. What difference does it make if the qb's foot is behind the los when making a pass when the ball is 3' past it. My interpretation is where the ball is when released.

Marshall was nowhere close to being over the line of scrimmage, totally legal pass. AU OL position was all fine as well.

What was not fine is 2 Bama defenders losing their coverage responsibilities or missing 3 FGs before this play, just one of which would have won the game, or failing on 4th and 1 after stopping AU on their ill advised 4th down try.

But hey, it happens, gotta remember these are a bunch of 18-22 year old kids playing a game. Bama has won 3 of 4 NCs, ton of games, SEC titles, it's not like we would never lose ever again.

Auburn easily could have lost to A&M (likely would have without Manziel injury), SHOULD have lost to UGA, and SHOULD have been down to Bama by 10 or 13 before that last TD.

But that is why they play the games and why we love it.

12-1 with a BCS bowl win is great, even spectacular when you consider it a disappointment.

Harvey Updyke starter kit fans with mean thoughts, words and threats for the Cade Foster need to get a life.

While I may agree with the rest of your post to say Marshall was no where close to over the LOS and their OL were all fine tells me you haven't looked at that play in any detail.

This is the way this rule has always been enforced. If any part of the QB is behind the LOS when the ball is released, the pass is legal. I remember a play in the NFL with Eli Manning that was reviewed. His entire body was beyond the LOS with the exception of part of his trailing foot. The pass was ruled legal. It was dicussed for weeks afterward because so few properly understood the rule.

I remember that play too. I thought it was ball placement before that and before Saturday thought the NCAA used ball placement.

Did they ever change it?

I am aggravated by this play as well ... There was a clear holding call that should have been called on poor A'Shawn Robinson. He was taken down ...
I am more frustrated though at the 3rd down. We were regaining control of the game. Stopped Auburn on that 4th down and had excellent field position. We ran with Yeldon 13 yards on the 1st play. Got down to the 16 or so yard line ... on 3rd and short we ran with Yeldon. I went and watched this over and over again. That was a pinnacle screw up in the game by the officials. He clearly got the 1st down or at least extremely close to it ... enough it would have needed to be measured. I believe he had it. They put us a whole yard back .. Now don't get me wrong, I don't love the call on 4th down considering they had the box stacked with like 10 guys ... but we should have had the 1st down!!!
I have to stop watching this game or it is going to make me crazy! I can handle losing .. but to know how much home cooking was against us ... it is difficult!

IIRC, Pagan was being held as well, but I'm not going to look at it again...

I have avoided re-watching the game. I do think that Auburn got the benefit of a doubt on a few calls, but I can't say any have risen to the level of some blunders in the past. That's just why you can't let the game get that close, you let the refs decide your fate and well, that's a bad spot to be in...
