On a side note, I believe Major League Base Ball a few years ago was toying with the idea of adding instant replay to the game to correct bad calls. When they actually started evaluating it they realized that the umpires got the call correct about 98% of the time.
Actually, MLB is considering adding instant replay again this year. I think they may only use it for foul balls and HRs though.

I don't mind the calls where the officials allow the play to continue so that a review can be called upon to make sure the call is correct. What I have a big problem with as far as officiating is when on personal foul penalties two or more players are blatently involved and instead of the ref calling offsetting personal fouls as should be the case he calls the personal foul on the last player involved. Also, some of the celebration penalty calls are rediculous. I can understand not letting them taunt and act an utter fool on the field but when your team makes and outstanding play and a guy scores a touchdown and simply spins the ball on the field and walks off he should not be given a fifteen yard penalty for excessive celebration.

Officiating across the board has seemed to have deteriorated in the past several years. If the game is that fast then why not add one or two more officials to keep pace?

I agree. If officials were as passionate about getting calls right as they were about making sure no undue celebration breaks out after a big play (watch how many run up to the players and try to herd them off the field), we would probably not have much need for the replay.

Also, to engage in another bit of unrestrained hyperbole, if we have a replay official, why do we really need officials anyway? Just let the replay official review each play and see what happened after the fact and make sure all the calls are right. After all, hindsight is 20/20 (or 50/50 if you are Pat Dye).

I still think it was a mistake to get away from the system of assigning individual officials to the games in order of importance by their ranking as it was done before Kramer (please correct me if I am wrong) changed it to the crew system that is now used because everybody deserved to have the same shot at the most important games. If that's the case, then why do we not have the little league "everybody plays" rule for the players? I guess assignment on performance was not a concept valued by the SEC Office at the time.
