Didn't Byrd have "hoof and mouth" disease before Dean? I think Dean probably caught it from him. I would think that a former member of the KKK would have been run out of office long before now, but I guess the people of West Virginia don't have sense enough to do it!!!

Nothing like a former klansman who filibustered the Civil Rights Act in the 60s throwing around Nazi comparisons and saying he's standing up for the minority.

Thurmond and Helms were never members of the KKK. Byrd was.

Byrd holds a lot of power within the Democratic Party. He's pretty much the 'Senate rules' guru.

Where's the outrage over his comments from the Democrats?

If he doesn't represent them, then shouldn't they make it known?

When Trent Lott made a statement that was considered to be offensive regarding Strom Thurmond, he was met by criticism from within the party and then apologized.

Byrd hasn't apologized. He says that he didn't make such a comparison, although it is fairly clear what he was implying in his statements. Have any Democrats called for him to apologize? Perhaps only Republicans are supposed to apologize for insensitive remarks?

Which evokes the question: who does represent Democrats? Each time one of these characters makes an incredibly stupid or outrageous remark, we are assured "he doesn't represent Democrats." In Byrd's case, is he speaking for the Klan?

Judging by its popularity, Nazism seems to be Democrats' preferred analogue when dealing with the opposition party's programs. They seem incapable of judging any GOP incentive without referring in some fashion to Hitler. Is their collective imagination that stunted and juvenile?

Pachy, you know that the Democratic party is the king(or queen, as of late  ) of the emotional phrase.

There are certain provocative phrases and analogies that are their bread-and-butter:

1. Racist: if you don't support reverse-discrimination or you don't believe that civil-rights leaders such as Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton are more credible role-models than such achievers as Dr. Bill Cosby or Justice Clarence Thomas, then you will be called a racist. Amendment: The aforementioned criteria are no longer required. You will be called a racist for presenting any belief counter to DNC or NAACP dogma.

2. Sexist: if you believe that there are differences between men and women, then you shall be referred to as sexist. Amendment: The aforementioned criteria are no longer required. You will be called a sexist for presenting any belief counter to DNC or NOW dogma.

3. Homophobe: if you believe that sexual behavior between members of the same sex is anything other than completely natural and normal, you shall be referred to as a homophobe. Amendment: The aforementioned criteria are no longer required. You may be labeled as a homophobe for presenting any belief counter to DNC dogma or wincing when two half-naked men from your local GLBTA engage in extremely graphic sexual behavior on a float in front of your children during the "Founder's Day Parade" in your town.

4. Right-wing Christian extremist: if you accidentally switched on a local church service while surfing the channels on your TV during the last five years, you may be referred to as a right-wing Christian extremist. Amendment: The aforementioned criteria are no longer required. You may be labeled a right-wing Christian extremist for any reason, rational or not.

5. Fascist: No criteria exist for this label. It may be liberally applied to anyone that doesn't agree with you on any level.

6. Nazi: see Fascist.

7. Hate: the act of not agreeing with a liberal.

You'll see the average lib throwing around these terms quite often, because their message relies on emotion instead of logic. They don't have to justify their usage of a label against someone else. That would be "oppressive".

Can someone post the offending quotes here that Byrd made. For some reason the apnews site is blocked here at work.
Best I could do:

Byrd to the KKK's Imperial Wizard: "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia."

March 4, 2001, Byrd told Fox News's Tony Snow: "There are white n*ggers. I've seen a lot of white n*ggers in my time; I'm going to use that word."

Sen. Byrd vowed never to fight "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

There is also stuff out there about Sen. Fritz Hollings and Richard Gephardt spoke before a prominent St. Louis white-rights organization during his first run for Congress and attended two of the group's picnics after his election.

Well the obvious difference is Byrd gets a pass because he is a democrat. Look at poor Trent Lott. The media crucified him and he didnt even do a dang thing wrong. I tell you, PC is nothing but communism. It disgusts me.
